Common Cures Part II

COMMON CURES PART II:

WARNING ABOUT GENERICS: In an article in BOTTOM LINE health magazine, they warned against using generic prescritpions. These are made in India and China with poor compounding standards. A friend was using a Synthroid generic and found that she “crashed” by the middle of the day. Her doctor advised not to take another pill. She discovered the article, switched to the real Synthroid and her problem was solved.

ON TAKING VITAMINS: Never take vitamins or medications within 2 hours of drinking coffee (says nutritionist at the Village Green Apothecary). Never take calcium within 2 hours of consuming chocolate – the oxalic acid will bind with the calcium, not only rendering it useless but possibly causing kidney stones.

Tea, coffee, raw fish and shell fish contain thiamineases – this can destroy vitamins.

ILLNESS DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGENS: In Washington DC area, contact Affiliated Inspectors, Inc. located in Chevy Chase. They are part of the American Society of Home Inspectors. The company consists of environmental specialists. Their contact info is: 301/986-8866 in Maryland and 703/356-8866 in Virginia. They inspect residential and commercial building for mold, spores, radon, water, asbestos, etc. The Washingtonian magazine quoted “…reputation for scrupulous inspection”. Their web page is:

DEPRESSION: First, I suggest having a blood test done that will tell your levels of vitamins and minerals. Traditional doctors have observed that many people suffering with depression have a vitamin D-3 deficiency. This will not cure the depression but it dramatically helps calm the negative, stressful moods associated with depression. Form: Liquid D-3, the pearl type, and 1000 mgs. Articles associate the D-3 deficiency with Chronic Fatigue and Seasonal Affective Disorder. More info: www.vitamindcouncil.com

MANGOSTEEN JUICE: I have found that this juice helps with very low level depressed moods.

VITAMIN D & LONGEVITY: British and American researchers found that higher vitamin D levels were linked to improved genetic measures of lifelong aging and chronic stress. While traditional doctors are recommending 800 mgs, higher doses have also been recommended. Recent research suggests that beyond its well-established role in bone health, vitamin D also may help reduce the risk of certain cancers and autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The U.S. government’s recommended daily allowance is 200 IU until age 50, 400 IU for 50-70 year olds, and 600 IU after age 70. However, many medical experts believe those recommendations are way too low. Generally, medical experts consider it safe to take between 1,000 IU and 2,000 IU of vitamin D supplements daily. UV RADIATION PROTECTION: “Treatment with this broccoli sprout extract might be another protective measure that alleviates the skin damage caused by UV radiation and thereby decreases our long-term risk of developing cancer.” More info: www.medicalnewstoday.com

MORE ON YOGURT: Findings from Bell Institute of Health:- Women who consumed yogurt more frequently (at least three servings over 14 days) had a significantly lower BMI, or healthier body weight, than those who didn’t consume yogurt; – Overall, women who ate three or more servings had better nutrient intakes and were less likely to fall short on important nutrients including calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B-12, magnesium and phosphorous

As stated earlier, GOAT YOGURT is higher in trace minerals than cow yogurt and less likely to cause an allergic reaction. That is, people who have dairy allergies can often eat goat products.

MILK THISTLE: Recently, scientists demonstrated the anti-cancer effects of silibinin, a major biologically active compound of milk thistle. Being widely used as a folk remedy for liver diseases, milk thistle is safe and well-tolerated, and it protects the liver from drug or alcohol-related injury. Silibinin is highly purified from milk thistle.

ALZHEIMERS DISEASE: Researchers have successfully used a peptide to reverse biochemical, cellular and anatomical changes that occur in the brains of mice with Parkinson’s disease (PD), and report success in preventing the disease from progression.

Pre- & Probiotic combination linked to better antioxidant status: The synbiotic formulation containing oligofructose prebiotics (Beneo-Orafti) and a mixture of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium probiotics was associated with a reduction in oxidation of LDL, linked to, amongst other things, the development of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

DO NOT TAKE PROBIOTICS if you have pancreatitis!

SOY ISOFLAVONES & REDUCED ASTHMA SEVERITY: Four weeks of supplementation with genistein, an isoflavone from soy, may suppress the inflammatory process and ease breathing and explain previous reports linking the isoflavone to reduced asthma severity, suggests a new pilot study.

OSTEOPOROSIS and SOY: Habitual consumption of soybeans and isoflavones may increase mineral density in young women.

CARDIO: Omega-3 with high fat meal eases cardiovascular changes – Consuming the omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid along with a high fat meal may counter the detrimental effects on arterial stiffness, suggests new research

  • Green tea shows benefits against fatty liver – Extracts from green tea stop the build-up of fatty deposits in the liver

AGING: Low vitamin E levels linked to greater physical decline – Low blood levels of vitamin E are linked to greater physical decline in older people, suggests a new study from Yale University School of Medicine

NEUROPATHY: Citrus Flavanoids show Neuro-Protection potential. Antioxidant compounds in citrus fruit may have a role in protecting against neuro-degenerative diseases, suggests lab study from Taiwan. Some form of neuropathy is common in the elderly.

COLLOIDAL SILVER CONTROVERSY: More info: www.lifesilver.com
Don’t worry about turning blue!

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME: In February 2008, Dr. Ira Rosenfeld, on FOX TV, started that the current research indicates that RLS is do to a lack of iron “in the brain” – not in the body but in the brain only. This interferes with Dopamine, a hormone that regulates body movements. These people do well on Parkinson Disease drugs. If not controlled, these people have a higher incidence of heart attacks and stroke.

EPILEPSY: Reference: www.medicinenet.com

Adults with epilepsy who have failed other treatments may be able to dramatically reduce their number of seizures by following a modified Atkins-like diet, Johns Hopkins researchers report. For the study, Kossoff’s team gave the diet to 30 adults who had unsuccessfully tried at least two anti-convulsant drugs and had an average of 10 seizures a week. The eating plan restricts patients to 15 grams of carbohydrates a day. Most of the calories come from fats such as eggs, meats, oils and heavy cream. In addition, patients are free to eat as much protein and no-carb drinks as they want. “There was good news and bad news,” Kossoff said. “The good news was it worked. The bad news it was tough.

CHOLESTEROL & OATS:

Scientists funded by ARS have discovered that certain compounds in oats hinder the ability of blood cells to stick to artery walls. The oat compounds are called avenanthramides. The research team recently found that they significantly suppressed adhesive molecules that “glue” blood cells to artery walls. When blood cells stick to— and cause inflammation of— the artery wall, plaques build up. That accumulation—called atherosclerosis— can eventually block the blood vessel. The suppression provided by avenanthramides in oats may prevent this narrowing of the passageways through which blood flows.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE:
“Our research suggests that drinking BEET JUICE or consuming other nitrate-rich vegetables, might be a simple way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, and might also be an additional approach that one could take in the modern day battle against rising blood pressure,” said Professor Amrita Ahluwalia of the William Harvey Research Institute at Barts and The London School of Medicine

MedWire News: Drinking beetroot juice, which contains a high level of nitrate, substantially decreases blood pressure (BP) levels, inhibits platelet aggregation, and prevents ischemia-induced endothelial dysfunction, preliminary study findings show.
