Jupiter retrograde in Pisces

Reprint and updating from an article written in 1986
by Lynn Koiner

From July 23 through November 18, 2010, Jupiter will be Retrograde in the sign of Pisces. When Jupiter is Direct, it is a time to expand outwardly into social, political and professional areas. It is geared toward externals and outer accomplishment. When Jupiter goes Retrograde, the action is reversed and the emphasis is upon inner awareness and inner growth and it is a time to get in touch with personal integrity. When opportunities arise, they are the result of seeds planted in the past, from people met in the past or from connections made in the past.

Jupiter Retrograde is more spiritual and philosophical so it is a time to rediscover a simpler philosophy that you have used once before— something may occur that reminds you of a time when you had a better perspective.

It is a time to complete Jupiterian projects— to go back to school and finish your education, to take a long distance trip that you had postponed, or to make a connection with a long lost friendship. It is a good time to take spiritual or psychological courses in order to gain a better perspective on life. It favors all activities that are altruistic, raising money for a good cause or group.

In my chart interpretation, I use a key phrase for Jupiter Retrograde— that it is the area (the House) wherein you are able to restore to life things or relationships that are considered dead or dying. Jupiter Retrograde in the 2nd, 6th and 8th Houses are excellent for healing. Jupiter Retrograde in the 2nd and 4th Houses favors restoring objects or houses for resale. It might be interpreted that, when Jupiter is transiting Retrograde, it is a good time to restore or revive any project or relationship that is failing. I consider Jupiter to be the relating principle in a chart— how we reach out and connect with others and what we relate to most easily. During the Retrograde Cycle, it is a good time to go back and make a re-connection; it is a time to revive that which is failing.

The philosophical orientation struck home back in 1986 when I found myself doing a lot of soul-searching— about myself, my career and the direction that I needed to take in my relationships with others in my professional activities. I felt that I reflected more than acted, especially because Mars was also Retrograde (as it is in early 2010). I felt the need to see things from a broader perspective (Jupiter) and not my tiny Virgoan vision. To further expand my vision, I had a reading with my dear friend, Elisabeth Fitzhugh. With Jupiter Retrograde, the reading truly gave me a broad perspective about the direction that my energies were taking me. There was a Full Moon at the time, representing illumination. As the Sun casts light upon the dark face of the Moon, so too our Soul and inner self can shine through and show us what was previously hidden.

With Jupiter Retrograde in Pisces, a compassionate, tolerant understanding can manifest. The philosophy and reflection of this Cycle can contain more of an inner vision, a spiritual quality and a greater sense of altruism than when Jupiter is in other signs. NOTE: Just as Jupiter Direct was entering Pisces in 2010, the crisis in Haiti touched the hearts of many, evoking a humanitarian response around the world.

DEPRESSION & JUPITER RETROGRADE IN PISCES:

In the summer of 1986, Jupiter was just retrograding in Pisces when I returned home from an astrological conference in Los Angeles. I experienced depression, feeling uncertain about the new direction in my life, and I did not even know where to begin in making the needed changes. This was a strange and abnormal feeling for one with 3 planets in Gemini— a sign that counteracts depression and boredom with mischievousness, finding little adventures and mental stimulation. Upon talking with friends, I noticed a similar pattern with people who were experiencing the same feelings of uncertainty and despondency. What was happening astrologically? I knew immediately— it was Jupiter Retrograding in Pisces!

As I earlier wrote, Jupiter Retrograde is a time for going inward and examining one’s self from an internal, introspective, spiritual and philosophical perspective. It is one of the best times to make a good evaluation of your psychological state and the growth path that must be taken. However, Jupiter in Pisces is quite different in its perspective than when in other signs. Pisces is vast, cosmic and universal. Now, when we go inside and examine ourselves, we see the vast vision of all that needs to be changed, the long road to be taken and it can make us depressed. In Pisces, its abstract nature does not show us the specifics of what must be done to bring about the changes— the wide angle perspective can be overwhelming.

It would be so easy if one could look inside and see what needs to be changed this week, next week or next month but seeing great stretches of time can be disconcerting. It is like me having an experience at 18 years of age wherein I would see where I am today and what I have accomplished. It would boggle the mind of an 18-year old who would become aware of all of the studying that would have to be undertaken to get here but not knowing exactly where to start. Pisces is a sign that, in its sensitivity, easily becomes depressed and feels sorry for itself.

The friends that seemed to have fared best under Jupiter in Pisces were those who took immediate steps to extrovert their energies. One friend decided to return to college to study courses that interested her the most and energized her mentally. I could feel the positive energy as she described what she was doing. Another friend decided to study flying in order to get a pilot’s license. She enjoyed her selection because of the type of high-energy people with she became involved with during her training. You can see that these are extroverting activities with extroverted personalities involved. This is important! At that time (this was back in 1986), I did not seem to be able to find extroverting mental activities but I did find solutions that helped: 1) I demanded of the cosmos my right to have energy and to feel good; 2) I went to the drugstore and bought a paperback book that engrossed me mentally; 3) I started meditating with a black obsidian crystal to ground my energies.

When embarking upon an introspective mode, shocks and trauma in the life seem to have an even greater negative effect. I feel that emotional traumas experienced while Jupiter is Retrograde, especially in Pisces, can cause tears and stresses upon the etheric web, this web being the outer rim of our etheric body. This, in turn, makes the individual more vulnerable to the negative influences of the astral or emotional plane.

In 1986, I wrote this article for all who may be experiencing these same moods. If you realize that you are not the only one and that there are astrological influences to justify your feelings, then you may start to feel better.

  1. Ana Says:

Hi Lynn!, I find this extremely interesting…my mother died in july85 and I was very depressed from then to 88 ( I also divorced in 87 after a 12 years marriage)..afterwards I began to write daily during that period. I went back to my country of birth for 3 years encountering a tremendous personal social ordeal.
I was wondering because I wish to do a journey to the country where I was living from 76 to 88 . I have still great friends there including my exhusband. ( I have been a bit of a compulsory gipsy). I have Piscis in House 10!and I am about to have my Saturn Return.
Do you feel would be a good idea?19-11-52. Havana, Cuba.7:30PM. (Thanks for your revelatory insights!).Ana.

  2. Lynn Koiner Says:

The only Retrograde planet that I use for travel is Mercury R — I prefer not to travel then. I do not consider the other planets to be important or indicative of travel situations.

In November (2010) when I travel to Europe, Venus will be R and I find this a good time to reconnect with people I have not seen in awhile. It is also a good time for shy people to be more extroverted.
The key to traveling is to choose a day to start the trip when the Moon is only making favorable aspects while it is in the sign. This is called Electional Astrology.

  3. Anu Says:

Great article! Jupiter is retrograde in my 1st house and I find that I am feeling a bit “lost” about how I deal with everything in life – relationships, my career, my own self.

Lynn, what is your opinion on intercepted houses? I find that even though I have Pisces rising, with a wide 1/7 house, Aries forecasts work better for me. For instance the mars transit through Leo is impacting my relationships much more than the 6th house of work (although that too is in a flux). How do I read this kind of a chart?

  4. Lynn Koiner Says:

I am sure I have articles on interceptions under Medical Astrology. They are blocked energy like being in the 12th House but the planets therein can only be expressed in that House (where they are intercepted).

  5. Judit Says:

    Great article, Lynn!
I have enjoyed reading it, but at the same time I got scared. I remembered what happend in my life in 1986 and then 1998. In 1986 I lost my father, I was 12 and my parents divorced. Since then I never saw him again (he went to live to another country). In 1998 I “divorced” from my ex-boyfriend. At the end of the same year I knew my actual husband, and I never saw my ex again (I live in another country). I have my natal Jupiter in the 6th house in Piscis. I`m a little affraid what will happen to me. Can you tell me something about it? Another loss? We`re waiting our second baby for July.
    Thank you in advance,
    best regards
    Judit.

  6. Lynn Koiner Says:

Losses are not really a part of Jupiter R in Pisces, especially since, for you, this is a Jupiter Return, an expansive cycle that is actually good for having a baby.
The losses in the past cycles were probably due to the outer planet transits and not Jupiter R in Pisces so do not worry.

  7. nadeem ahmad Says:

Hi,My date of birth is july2,1963.and we are expecting a baby
around 26th of october, since the jupiter is retrograde in this time please let me know with mostly planets in the scorpio.
what kind of personality my child would have and an impact on me as a father.
    Thank you in advace

  8. Lynn Koiner Says:

Nadeem: First, an astrologer cannot tell you about your child’s personality until after it is born.
Next, read the interpretation of Jupiter R in general, not just this article. It will tell you what Jupiter R means – this is on my website.
Lastly, this will be the Great Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in the child’s chart…and this is a very good thing, esp. trine Scorpio planets.

  9. gemini_sunmoon Says:

I have a question as well, I hope you find some time to read this.

Do you get a double jupiter return if Jupiter turns retro after the conjunction? Then transiting Jupiter comes back over N Jupiter and goes back forward over it again.. ? What does that imply?
(I have jupiter at 16o40.31 aquarius retrograde natal)

I have been sort of depressed since half october 2009, not sad, just no energy, only energy was nervous and not constructive.

I am a Gemini sun and moon, and i have never been without energy like this before, for such a long time.
I’m doing better now but it goes so slow!

I thought the deep intense obsessive psychological and philosophical thinking was due to Pluto conj my Neptune, opposing my Sun, Moon(gemini) Mercury and Mars(cancer) also trining my Venus (taurus) and trine asc in virgo.

But as a went back to the time I started feeling depressed and drained, I noticed it was also my Jupiter return, which led me to your website.

An other thing which was quite remarkable was that at one point ( around January) i couldn’t think straight, had trouble with difficult words or any thing i learned before, calculate, spell.
I feel like i was bound to swim around in feelings only feelings, no boundaries at all!

I have to say, I understand people better now, other peoples feelings, the depth of my psychological nature and other peoples as well.

Scorpio people have been of my interest as well.

My data: 18 june 1985 11am34, rotterdam, the netherlands.

I wish i would feel myself again. I feel i make progress, but the process is so slow!

When did it stop for you? And what do you think of the role of Pluto in this?
Was this experience extra intense for me because of my natal chart?

I hope you can give me some insight in this as well as give me some advice, even though i feel it is almost over.
    Thanks!

  10. Lynn Koiner Says:

GEMINI: First, almost everyone experiences Jupiter making 3 crossings for their Jupiter Return. If you calculate a chart for the Jupiter Return, use the last crossing as this is the one that colors the next 12 year cycle.

DEPRESSION: It seems to be the Pluto-Uranus-Saturn affecting your Ceres-Mars-Mercury/ Neptune configuration. I gave a lecture on depression at the recent MAC conference.

DEPRESSION & MARS IN CANCERMARS IN THE 4th HOUSE:

This Mars finds it easier to express anger towards family members rather than directly at the offending person. Fear and Fear of the Unknown are at the root of Mars in Cancer depression.

This Mars is both emotional and irrational in its angry reactions. There may be moods that cause the individual to shut down emotionally rather than express anger. If this mood lasts too long, it becomes a depression. These people should never eat when angry or upset since foods become toxins in this state.

The Mars will sulk and cry when depressed but a good cry is very helpful to pulling them out of a depressed state. Men are less likely to cry; men are more likely to shut down and withdraw.

Depression can occur when they feel that they have given too much nurturing to others and nothing is given back to them.

In the 4th House, angry people in the person environment, when they feel that they cannot stand up for themselves, will lead to depression.

GETTING OUT: I find that Mars Water signs can release anger, anger that could become depression, by symbolically “killing something.” A woman with Mars in Pisces gave an excellent solution: she confided that she hated loud noises so, in killing something, she threw her sweaters around the room. When she was finished, she jut picked them up and packed them back in the drawers. This Mars always needs support and reassurance, affection, to get out of a depression. Mars in Cancer square Neptune in Libra can have a family pattern of alcoholism. Even if the person does not drink or use drugs, there will be other addictions, such as food or gambling, which are a release or escape from depression. But, after they have eaten too much or lost money, they eventually become depressed. MY NOTES ON DEPRESSION: DEPRESSION: 1) Acute Mars Dysfunction combined with Saturn afflictions that undermine self-confidence and self-esteem. 2) Hypo-Thyroidism – even with thyroid supplements, they are very prone to depression. People with low thyroids feel that they are not alive. NOTE: The Cardinal signs, being hit now, affect the Adrenal-Thyroid. I am sure I have information on this on the Medical Forum. Low body temperature is the clue that these glands are not working (hence, the low energy). This seems to be the problem as I can tell. BUT, only a hormone saliva test can determine this -- NOT A BLOOD TEST! Gynecologists know about these tests, not a GP doctor. 3) CAYCE: Damage to cerebrospinal nervous system, the cervic. Accident in past that affected spine - Cayce. There may have been a fall a few years earlier. 4) FOOD ALLERGIES: Mary's comment made me realize that there can be another source of a depression -- food allergies. I have heard people talk on TV about this. I just returned from Austria where I learned a lot about food allergies (and sugar reactions) -- the source of chronic fatigue, asthma, joint pain...and many other problems, including depression. It does take awhile for the "good nutrition" to kick in. Do not give up if results are not immediate. I was having a very bad reaction to sugar. I would give it up for 2 or 3 days and then say this did not work. It actually took 10 days before I felt better. NOTE: The afflictions to your Moon indicate that you do have FOOD INTOLERANCES (not allergies but intolerances that are only detected by the ImG or Elisa test). DIET: News bulletin on NBC: Research was conducted with people on depression. I only got that they switched to a high protein diet (similar to the South Beach type) and took supplements...I only heard tyrosine. Exercise. 5) BI-POLAR: Roller Coaster emotional ride around 2-3 years when personality was undeveloped and unable to separate from the situation. Patterning continues. Jim Carey has switched to 5HTP and Tyrosine. NOTE: I would use Life Extension 5-HTP 6) THE EDGE EFFECT - Migraine-Serotonin balance is Mg-dependent. Deficiency of serotonin can result in migraine headaches and depression. ALTERNATIVE THERAPY: Most alternative therapies for bipolar disorder have focused on the prevention and treatment of depression and not the manic episodes. They include: 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, ayurveda, dehydroepiandoseterone (DHEA), folic acid, ginkgo, healing touch, Kundalini yoga, L-carnitine, massage, melatonin, music therapy, omega-3 fatty acids, psychotherapy, Qi gong, reiki, relaxation therapy, riboflavin (Vitamin B2), SAMe, St. John's wort, tai chi, vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) and yoga. 7) Magnesium Deficiency and Vitamin D3 (at least 4000 ius need to be taken - also, Omega 3 helps with depression (4000 mgs) but you MUST be the best quality so there are not polutins in the oils!!! EDGAR CAYCE'S PERSPECTIVE ON DEPRESSION Edgar Cayce was decades ahead of modern medical research when he gave graphic descriptions of nervous system pathology in cases of depression. When he spoke of such nervous system pathology in cases of depression, he would sometimes use the expression "lapse of nerve impulse" to portray the breakdown in nerve cell communication. The readings give many reasons for this characteristic "lapse in nerve impulse." In numerous cases, glandular dysfunction was cited as the source of the problem. Edgar Cayce's explanation was that the nervous system is dependent upon the glands of the body to provide the chemicals essential for normal nerve cell functioning. When the glands fail to provide these essential chemicals, various physical, mental and emotional symptoms (including depression) can result. Endocrine gland pathology (most often the adrenal, thyroid and pineal glands) was noted in several cases of depression. Significantly, modern medical research has also acknowledged the involvement of these important endocrine glands in depression. Toxicity (Fixed signs) is another common biological cause of depression cited by Edgar Cayce. In some readings, he spoke of a "deadening" effect to the nervous system produced by the absorption of toxins into the nerve fiber. Apparently, this deadening effect could have a depressive effect upon the nervous system leading to the characteristic "lapse in nerve impulse." NOTE: I recommend the Turkey Rhubarb formula from www.theherbfinder.com I take 2 pills daily...but then I stop for awhile and then on again. This keeps the colon clear without being harsh or being addicting to the system. Naturally, treatment recommendations in such cases focused heavily on therapies intended to cleanse the body. Improved diet, with regular massage and hydrotherapy, were common prescriptions in such cases. While Edgar Cayce's perspective has many similarities to the modern medical (biochemical) model of depression, there are important differences. Instead of relying heavily on medication to alter the chemical balance in the nervous system, he would usually recommend more natural methods. These "holistic" therapies would help the body to be its own "medicine chest" and thus bring its faulty biochemistry back into a healthy state. "Holistic" refers to Cayce's tendency to consider the whole person (body, mind and spirit) when diagnosing illness and making treatment recommendations. Hence, Edgar Cayce is widely regarded as the "father of modern holistic medicine." Another difference between Cayce's perspective and the medical model is the role of mental and spiritual factors which may lead to depression of the nervous system. For example, he would often note psychospiritual causes, such as unhealthy attitudes, or a lack of spiritual direction in a person's life, as a precedent of nervous system pathology. The readings contain many examples of mentally (i.e., psychosomatically) induced depression. "Mind is the builder" is a prominent theme in the readings and is based upon the inherent association of mental processes with the nervous system. Self-condemnation was a particularly destructive mental pattern frequently noted in cases of depression. Failure to live up to an ideal (or even have an ideal) was sometimes cited as a primary source of mental depression.

    Hello Sir Lynn,

I also want to share something about myself. I don’t know english much better but I try to write properly. Sir, I have 0 degree Jupiter in aries in 9th house and North Node and Moon in Pisces in the 8th house. Now I m going through the MAin Period of Venus (Venus in Taurus in 10th house). And Sub-period of Jupiter and now also i m experiencing 8th house. Depressive and unstable mind. I don’t know what to do and what not to do? Before this Jupiter Sub-period I was going through north node sub-period. And feel very depressive and personal desire were always losing. phyical problems and unforeseen problems I faced. When Jupiter sub-period starts it was professionally not good but pesonally it was a good period. I met to my first love of my school days love. We chat on facebook and have fun. But at the last of the period of Jupiter in Pisces, we are going far and some differences come in between us. And Now I come to know that she also loves me. And this is great feeling for me. And time is going on its way some distance are come in between us. Does we come near in when jupiter will retrogade in pisces. Hi. I was curious about Jupiter retrograde in Aries. I believe that Jupiter is retrograde on July 23, 2010, but in Aries. I believe it moves into Pisces on September 8 or 9. Thoughts on Jupiter retrograde in Aries?

  13. Lynn Koiner Says:

I may have an article on Jupiter in Aries written from the past but I will look for this later, as the time draws near.
I do remember that the period from Jupiter in Aquarius through Aries is a much more expansive time. Things get really dull and safe when it enters Taurus. People then are less inclined to take risks.
R or D is not really important to the interpretation of the sign.

  14. irish Says:

Hi! I wonder if it is advisable to travel or if it’s advisable to pursue further studies during a jupiter retrograde? I will be reapplying for a student visa this coming August, I’m really fearful of the result. I already happen to experience delays on the first half of this year. I have jupiter 29 degrees pisces. I really don’t know how to read a natal chart but this is what my astrological chart says.

  15. Lynn Koiner Says:

IRISH: Do not worry about Jupiter R and school. Jupiter is R for 5-6 months out of the year and almost always during the time when students are returning to school.
