The traditional statement about Mercury retrograde is that it favors anything that begins with the prefix “re-” — re-negotiate, re-vamp, re-new, re-vise, return, re-issue, re-visit, re-finance because the word retrograde itself means “to go back and retrace one’s steps.”
Many people call me about how to handle the decision-making process while Mercury is retrograde. Always, decisions should only be made on contingency! With the element of flexibility added to any change or decision, there seems to be some guarantee of success. This period also favors finishing up work or returning to complete a project. This motion can provide new insights into the material. It favors re-considering prior decisions and getting others to change their minds about a previously-made decision. Precision is always disrupted by a retrograde Mercury. Going with the flow, keeping options open, using contingency methods and intuitively processing as you go along seem to give the flexibility needed to avoid Retrograde Mishaps.
Most of the time, Mercury retrograde is about as welcome as a tax audit! The left hemisphere of the brain is out to lunch, nothing works when you want it to, and nothing turns out as planned. Generally speaking, this is not a time to make any major commitments or sign any contracts or papers because you will change your mind. It is not a time to place any importance in the decisions or commitments of others since they, too, will change their minds. Sign agreements only on contingency! All changes are subject to delays, last-minute postponements or mix-ups.
This is a bad time to obtain a medical diagnosis or visit a doctor for the first time. You may not be able to obtain an accurate diagnosis until Mercury turns direct. It is better for a later diagnosis. In 2004, I was quite ill and no diagnosis during Mercury retrograde was accurate.
General repairs are not favored when Mercury is retrograde and these frequently have to be done over again. Never purchase anything associated with transportation or communication – such as a car, a bicycle, tape recorder, TV or even shoes. Such purchases will not last long or they will be plagued with malfunctions – if they work at all!
When Mercury is retrograde and afflicting another transiting planet, this causes major communication and decision-making errors in judgment. It is not a time to travel and, when driving yourself, exercise great caution. People are more inclined to be accident prone.
CRISIS LUNATIONS: Crisis Lunation periods occurs when, at the time that the Moon is New or Full, the Moon is physically very close to the earth. This closeness-lunation parallel will amplify our emotional reactions, bringing matters to a crisis point. This Crisis Moon period usually begins about one week before the New/Full Moon and lasts several days afterward. I find that you are only affected by one of the Crisis Moon periods, usually one that falls close to a natal planet. When a crisis arises, my advice is always to “stay calm, relax and make no impulsive decisions for at least a week.” The most critical are eclipses. The most potent occurred on April 15, 1995, because it occurred at the time of a Lunar Eclipse. Of course, the event it portended was the Oklahoma City bombing as the Eclipse fell on the ASC/DESC axis over that city. The WTC/Pentagon attack occurred within a wide orb of a Crisis Lunation. The US invaded Iraq on a Crisis Full Moon in March 2003.
I remember one example – a father called about his daughter who had run away from home about 4 days before the CFM. I told him what was occurring and that he should wait for about a week and she would likely return home….and she did. After the effects of the CFM were over, she became rational again.
There is a period when there is a string of CFMs — in 2010, there is one from August through October. There is usually only ONE of these CFMs that hits you — generally, not all of them … and you cannot always tell which one it is going to be. When it hits, you go crazy and your emotions are magnified. But, when the Moon begins to move away from the earth, we calm down. I am a Virgo so a rational explanation is very satisfying for me. If I know that I am feeling this way because of some astrological/astronomical configuration, it makes it seem OK and I feel much better.
June 22 2009 was a very critical New Moon/Solstice with many accidents, particularly the Metro disaster in Washington DC. Personally, everything that could go wrong did – flat tire requiring full tire replacements, computer stopped working, food poisoning…just to name a couple!
I first noticed this lunation in the early 1970s when my grandfather was in a nursing home. I saw that there were certain lunations in which the patients, called the Walkers, would pace more than usual. At that time, all I had was the Farmers Almanac to determine what was going on with the Moon. At first, I only used the Full Moon. Subsequently, I saw that another astrologer, Richard Nolle, used the Perigee New Moon…and he is absolutely correct. These work the same.
CRISIS LUNATIONS 2013:
New Moons: January 11 and November 3 (2 days away from exact), December 3 and January 1 (2014)
Full Moons: April 25, May 25, June 23, Jul 22 and August 21
Full Moon: The Full Moon of July 3 2012 was 2 days away from perigee. It seemed like the worst Crises Lunation to me with the horrible storm, loss of power and the loss of my beautiful Yard Tractor when a huge tree fell on it, crushing all but the headlights
ADDENDUM I: MERCURY RETROGRADE PURCHASES —
Many people have written about having to buy something when Mercury is Retrograde. Sometimes you just HAVE to buy something. With this Mercury R, my printer is not working. I need a printer. I selected March 6 since the aspects are very good, even though Mercury is Retrograde.
I remember years ago when I had to buy a TV for my partner while Mercury was R – I had no choice. So, I got a service contract on the TV. He never needed it and finally got rid of it when the new flat screen TVs became available.
Years ago, a client had to buy a truck for her husband who was a plumber. Mercury was R and she had no choice. I advised her to get a very comprehensive service contract, which she did. Using a horary chart for the purchase question, I advised her to keep the service contract for one year and then cancel it. Within a year, the truck caught on fire. Because she had the protection contract, it was replaced without cost to her.
ADDENDUM 2013: When both of my printers died when Mercury turned Retrograde, I HAD to buy a printer on March 6 – a good day astrologically, even though Mercury was Retrograde. I saw that Office Depot has the best price and they offer a service contract – a great protection for any Mercury R purchases.
It was snowing on the 6th so the parking garage next to the store was FREE. I took this as a good sign — but this store did not have the HP8600Plus. The employee there gave me a $10 coupon and he had located one at another store, about 3 miles away. When I got there, there was no 8600Plus but they offered me a $400 8600 Premium for the same price as the Plus – $199. The service contract was only $18 per year. It is a wonderful printer!
I find that it is OK to do something if you HAVE to do it when Mercury is R. This is a question that many of you have asked.
So, keep these experiences in mind when you HAVE to buy something when Mercury is Retrograde.

This is exactly what happens when Mercury is retrograde.
One time I had no choice but to schedule some minor surgery when Mercury was Retrograde. I picked a great electional day (all Moon’s aspects were great) and the surgery went well. But, months later, it was discovered that 2 stitches had been left in and were abscessing.
Sometimes an astrological conference is sceduled when Mercury is retrograde because it always occurs in early July. I leave for the airport early, I carry on all important materials and I leave a lot of time in case of errors or delays. This seems to work.

It could be that you change your mind about the job at some point but a common feature are that there are delays around your working conditions. I remember one lady showing up for her first day on the job only to find that her office was not ready. She had to work in the hall for a week.

ANA – a relationship of any type can alter or change when commenced with Mercury-Venus-Mars R. The R is not the deciding factor — the synastry between you and what was going on in tour charts by transit and progression tells the outcome for effectively.
Taurus men never listen so best he is gone. Your Libra would have to compromise too much to his Aries-Taurus.

FRIEND – I am using the Merc retrograde for a job search. If I find an offer I like, should I hold off if possible till after the retrograde and not make the decision till later? Or would you think that any offers I receive during the retrograde aren’t what they seem & to stay away?
LYNN – I know more ways to work around this if you were an employer — hiring on contingency. It is often the Employee who has a change of mind, not the employer.
If you receive an offer, in this economy, just take it. You may opt for another job later on. Sometimes there are delays around the job so that you do not get to start until it goes direct. I remember one woman had to work out in the hall until her office was ready…and Mercury turned direct.

This is actually a good question from which others can benefit (I do not give personal readings here).
First, it is more important that you did not start your trip with a Mercury R. In that case, the R would not affect you so much. I have done this when I travel to Europe. I left on a good day and Mercury turning R did not affect me at all.
Second, because your husband has Mercury R natally, have him handle everything during the R period…he is less affected by this.
I would never sign a contract with Mercury R. One can sign if it is on a contingency basis…a firm decision made after Mercury goes direct.

Hi Lynn,
Is it safe to assume that if any retrograde planet (especially personal planets such as Mercury) makes aspect with natal planets that one could expect events?
Using Mercury, I’ve noticed the usual Mercury retrograde stuff like delays, reversals, etc. occur around me but they affected me personally only when aspects were made to natal planets.
I expect September’s Mercury retrograde to affect me adversely since it stations and retrogrades squares to my close natal Mercury and Venus conjunction – it hangs around
for eight days!

LYNN: I do not make specific predictions with these fast moving Retrogrades. The upcoming Mercury R stations at 6 degrees so I personally do not consider aspects to 4-5 degrees a station…but I do have an interpretation.
When Mercury D aspects your Venus-Mercury, there can be a stress that is altered or re-addressed later when Mercury R crosses it. But, Bob, sometimes nothing significant happens at all, aside from the R mishaps.
Cardinal signs can cause indecision but R gives you time to review.
Sometimes if the R ALMOST becomes exact…say you have a planet at 6 Capricorn 31…then a stress that you feel will come to pass will not. It will get dropped.
Years ago, there was a R moving to my Sun. The planet would turn R and move away just before it got to 6 Virgo 40.
Someone wanted to come and stay with me for a week. I dreaded this. Just before they were to come, they canceled and they never visited.
There can be problems if you ask on the impending event — like buy new furniture, hire a painter and spend a lot of money bringing in food…and they cancel. If the planet changes direction, the situation will be dropped.

SURGERY: I had surgery in 1988 when both Mars and Mercury were R — my foot had to be reattached. The best surgery this docot ever did.
Sometimes you just HAVE to have surgery.
One time I had elective surgery with Mercury R as I could not wait. The surgeon’s assistant forgot to remove 2 of the stitches and this caused problems until I found another doctor who spotted the problem. This was a blessing because I have gone to this 2nd doctor and he is brilliant.
When I have to do something and Mercury is R, I choose a day when the Moon’s aspects are favorable so, regardless, all will turn out well.

I have observed many wedding charts and the timing of the wedding has nothing to do with the relationship itself. One famous astrologer married on the “perfect day.” The marriage lasted 18 months exactly.
Mercury R warns that you be flexible on the wedding day because mishaps can occur — with the catering, with the weather, people getting lost getting to the location etc…but it does NOT affect the relationship.

Mercury is usually retrograde in the solar return chart every six years. When Mercury is retrograde, it is time to be introspective, especially about those things related to Mercury’s house placement. You should be doing a lot of your own thinking and learning rather than depending on others. Integrate previously acquired information into your own individualized mind-set. Think of your mind as an overloaded cabinet or closet seriously in need of filing and organization. It is time to process. You probably already know everything you need to know to handle a certain life situation. If you continue to depend on others for advice, you will find conversations meaningless within the context of your own intellectual needs and experience. Be aware that your mental processes are not very receptive to new information at this time. Your mind is like a cup that is filled to the brim. Any additional knowledge spills over and is lost. Work toward integrating what you already know.
You can experience this retrogradation as a certainty that you know you are right and only you can make the best decisions concerning your own future. What others tell you might clash with what you already know and you could tend to disregard their comments. You may be right, but the danger is that you may be wrong. You can be so in tune with your own thoughts that you are totally on the mark; then again, you might be totally off the beam. Take the time to reorganize information by focusing inward. You might find that your own opinions, thoughts, and decisions truly work best for you. But be aware of the feedback others give you, which may be particularly valuable if you have missed the mark.
Secretiveness is also associated with Mercury retrograde. There is a tendency to withhold information and sometimes lie. Generally, there are two major reasons for doing this: one is that you really do have secrets which need to be kept; the other is that expressing your opinions or thoughts openly causes tension in your relationships. Retrograde Mercury is associated with biting your tongue and swallowing your own words in order to keep peace. Your true opinions may not emerge until the start of the next solar return.
This time is excellent for putting your thoughts down on paper and writing original material. You will be able to see things differently when your thoughts are written down and this is a good way to get organized. Old opinions and beliefs may be outdated so you need to reassess your thinking, reformulate ideas, and shed new light on a subject area.

CLIFF: Mercury will be retrograde for EVERYONE returning to school so all will not be affected dramatically. Typical R misups can occur. Once this occurred for me and my transcripts from the former college had not been sent to the new college…but eventually they got there.
More depends on the transits to your natal planets, not this R necessarily.

REPAIRS: Your experience is very much like Mercury R. Sometimes things break down with the R and you HAVE to have the repair. I just pick a day with the Moon is making all favorable aspects before it leaves the sign. I had a similar experience with wiring many years ago and another electrician said that I did not need the house to be re-wired. Re-wiring an entire house rarely needs to be done, excpet by an unscrupulous electrician as you discovered. Sometimes surgeries have to be done with a R. I had 2 — one was to re-attach my broken foot and it was perfect surgery. Another was surgery on the outside of my ear. 2 stitches were left in and they became infected, until another doctor discovered the problem and removed them.

HIRING – My father knows all to well the problems of hiring when Mercury is R…and how quickly they leave.
I would hire only on contingency — 2 or 3 weeks to see how the person works out.
As for assessing a current employee, I would have an astrologer cast a horary chart, a chart done for a specific question.
A good horary astrologer may be hard to find so I will tell you the quick and easy. I usually pull 3 tarot cards to get an answer.
No, this is not astrology but I do it. My neighbor came over yesterday with a horary question which showed it was too early for her to make a decision (lend her son $55,000 to buy a condo in China where he lives — he’s Polish-Italian).
Then, I shuffled and spread out the tarot cards and had her pick 3. This showed that something sudden and unexpected would occur that would render the question moot.

SUNSHINE: Good question but it is meeting someone for the first time when VENUS is Retrograde that may cause the relationship to fizzle out. There is a reason, if you read my article on Venus R. We often size up others incorrectly when Venus is R.
I do not feel that Mercury R works this way at all — and I have been a professional astrologer since June 1969.
When meeting someone when Mercury is R, sometimes scheduling can cause problems so that you may not get together again until it turns D.
It is not even 100% bad for starting a job. As I gave as an example, one woman had to work in the hall until her office was remodeled…when Mercury turned D, she moved in.

ELSA: Yes, there are ways to work with Mercury R. It is a good time to go over the negotiations as they may be something new that you have not seen before. Usually, I like to leave some contingency in case something goes wrong — his clients do not stay with you — and this seems to just protect the situation. When I comes to hiring under Mercury R, it works best if they are hired on a wait-and-see basis. Then, it just seems to work out. And, as I said before, it is a good time to look over the negotiations for something that you have missed earlier. Mercury R gives new insights.

Lynn you are so correct. I can name countless things that I have done during Mercury retrograde that ended up undoing itself. For example a job offer which I took that turned out to be a nightmare even though it looked like a dream and the electronics that I purchased that ended up packing up and the RMA is taking over three months to sort out. Long story short I had to quit the job and buy a new item as it was taking so long to get a replacement. Maybe because I am a Virgo but Mercury retrograde has been nothing but trouble. I can’t see how some astrologers talk about it been a welcome window of change. Personally it has been a window of disaster that just leaves me worse off than before. If there is anything that I have learned from the Mercurial retrograde motion is to try and avoid doing anything like a plaque during its influence.

This current retrograde has been a nightmare for me. Teenage daughter left home, moved in with her boyfriend and his parents, a bad situation for a lot of reasons. Cell phone coverage around my house is suddenly nonexistent. Repeated calls to them are met with horrible communication and no results. Lots of issues at work with the new computer system and printers. Locked into imobility until this ends.

T: It is not just Mercury R. This is also a Crises Full Moon and this week has been fraught with crises (Moon close to earth). I thought I owed $5000 more taxes but, after talking to the accountant, I am getting $134 back! The stress has been so exhausting, even though all turned out well. So, it is not just Mercury R…it is worse!

With MR coming up August 2-26 I’m curious. I am currently working out a new arrangement with my office to rent a different space in the same office. I must give 30 day notice to do this and plan to on July 15th which would mean I would be moving in on August 15th when in retrograde. Since everything was put into motion prior to the retrograde, do you foresee problems? Thank you.
Aug 10, 12:08 PM STARTING A NEW JOB (8-2011): Do not delay starting a job just because Mercury is R. There can be other delays within the job — read some of my posts here. I just started to notice the mix-ups with Mercury R. I chipped a filling done last year but my regular dentist was out of town. I did go to another dentist for a cleaning and to look at my teeth. I did not let him fill it. I got my regular dentist do this — because this new dentist is VERY expensive, not because I do not feel that he could do the job.The new dentist turned out to be a crook!!

EMILYBH (12-211): NEVER SIGN PAPERS WHEN THERE IS A HARD MERCURY-SATURN aspect. Of course, this is a short lived transit but keep this in mind.
Contingency always works with Mercury Retrograde. And have the inspection done when Mercury is Direct.

If you have to sign, I would just do it. Mercury R means that you can always change your mind about this or there will be delays getting started. You cannot put your professional life on hold.
Sometimes whatever happens is destined to happen. I ordered a Yard Tractor to replace one that was destroyed in a recent Killer Storm. I bought it on a great day BUT it was delivered when Mercury turned R. A long story short – they need to return it to the warehouse in a week and then put on the special blades that I ordered and then return it — I have the lawn from hell that needs mowing NOW.
I have never been in this type of work situation so I do not have a clear answer but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.
Sometimes a conference is held during Mercury R. I always keep in mind that Mercury is R, keep my lecture notes with me until my talk is over — and it turns out fine.
Only a horary chart can give you an answer about this job.

KAY & BONI (7-2012): There are several posts above that would answer this question. But, to reiterate, if you interview for a job, you may have to go back for another interview or there can be changes in the appointment.
Do what you have to do but be flexible to other changes that might occur.
Having Mercury R natally does not protect you from transiting Retrogrades. You have to deal with other people who are having problems with the R.
In my Global Gatherings for 2011 (I have not typed up 2012 yet), an astrologer in Slovenia says that her partner was born with Mercury R. He always chooses a R time to have something repaired or start a project and it never turns out well.
The bottom line is that you jut have to do what you have to do. You cannot put your life on hold when Mercury is R — just be flexible and this will help.

TOM (11-2012): With the Eclipse and the Crises Lunation, this has been the retrograde from hell!
Let me tell you my miserable story — my computer and printer had problems, the sensor in my car needed replacing and, within 6 hours of bringing the car home, a squirrel (I have just learned) ate thru the spark plug wires and built a nest.
What a mess! Not to mention the expense just before the holidays!

I should have known, taking a holiday during mercury retrograde… I stayed at home and wanted to do some jobs there and also some daytrips. When sorting broken glass, I cut my finger, very deep, so I had to go to the hospital for stitches.
Because my fingertip felt numb, the doctor, that I didn’t know, suggested surgery. I immediately thought: No! not for a finger and not during mercury retrograde! So I called my own doctor for advise and he said: surgery is absolutely not necessary, it will heal in time on its own.
Now my holiday is all about doing everything in slow motion, and I can do almost no chores, it’s one of the most restful holiday’s I had in ages, you have to see the positive sides…

Considering a situation regarding going to the doctor, if we self diagnosed using a home kit before the retrograde and then went to the GP and specialist in retro period. Should we interpret like – the home kit results will not change and the other two reports are likely to change when the retro period ends. Kindly add/correct.

Our car was just totaled, so I too am in the unfortunate position of not only having to sign and settle with the insurance company, but also having to buy a car during Mercury retro. Your good days list says February 28 is the better day during this time, so that’s what we’ll shoot for.
We have also been entertaining the idea of purchasing a hybrid as a replacement car. Would a hybrid be even worse than a gas vehicle during Merc retro? Thoughts?

(2-2013)I had serious problems with an ex in the past.Weve been broken up 3 years. I worked hard to get this person out of my head and it finally worked but I did in an unhealthy way. I decided to contact my ex and since then I’ve realized many of my mistakes and how important they are to be. BEA (2-2013): It is impossible to be able to tell someone what type of car to purchase…just because Mercury is R.
When I have a choice to make and I do not ask a Horary Astrology question, I pull 3 cards for each type car.
Whichever cards are better, that is the one I go with.

I was born during a retrograde and I seem to feel late for everything, even though people always say I’m an asset in whatever I do. How would this (my birth) affect my job search/interviews and relationships during a retrograde?
By the way, I got a flat right before retrograde and got my car fixed just in case because I had a big business trip to a conference. So far, only issue is I am really not liking my room nor my roommates. No say so in any of it. Eh…

Never start anything just before Mercury turns R because many things will change when Mercury changes direction.
I feel that it does not really help people with Mercury R to initiate when Mercury is transiting R. You live in a world with Mercury D people and they change their minds or need to do an interview over again.
If you are forced to do something when Mercury in R, just do it but know there may be some changes. You cannot put your life on hold for 3 weeks. Although, I do delay major purchases, signing agreements or making commitments when Mercury is R.

Hi Lynn, Mercury is retrograde and I have the opportunity to move into a vacant, larger room in my boarding house on April 1 – after Mercury direct, but I have to make my decision during the retrograde. I’m feeling some pressure from roommates to decide, but my heart of hearts – and Tarot – tell me to wait. Is it more advisable to wait, or say yes?

Hey there Lynn,
A deep close friendship went through a sudden hell out of the blue and broke up just a few weeks or less before retrograde. So did everything in my life. I appeared to be in full crisis for no good tangible reason, do you think sometimes the Mercury Retrograde starts early?
Also since the friendship broke up before the retrograde do you think it could come back together by chance after the retrograde is over by chance?

CHRISTINE (3-2013): Yes, it sometimes seems as though Mercury R is starting early and I cannot tell you why — but NOT a few weeks before. Something else may have been going on in your chart.
Mercury R is not about getting back together but evaluating what went wrong in the friendship. Unless someone says “I’m sorry,” too much damage has been done in a bad break up and it usually can never be the same again.
If Neptune has been strong, the friendship has been dissolving all along and it just needed a trigger to break it off.

This retrograde has really kept me confused and heartbroken. On 9 march my Pisces boyfriend out off the blue broke up with me but his answers to my questions didnt quite make sense. I dont know if he meant the break up but he said he still cares about me and wants me to stay in his life. I know break-ups happen in retrogrades, but i dont know if they can reconcile during or hopefully after the retrograde. I am seeing him again on saterday, a day before the retrograde ends. I want to remain hopefull. Please help with your advice. I am a Virgo born 31 August. My pisces born 2 march.

YVETTE (3-2013): No astrologer can make a judgment using Sun Signs. Maybe the Pisces felt that you tried to change him but, when he ended the relationship, it was probably because he found someone else — not severing the ties with you may be a way of covering his bases, in case it does not work.
