The planet Mars has a cycle which lasts 23 months. It regulates the amount of energy available over a 2-year period. When Mars by transit nears the position and sign of your natal Mars, your energy level will be higher than normal. You will not only feel robust, energetic with high adrenaline surges but a lot of plans and activities will get under way. I do not find the activities themselves necessarily occurring at the time of the Mars Return but I do find it a time when plans are made that will come to pass at the time of the First Square. I call the First Square a Fruition Cycle— a time when the plans and decisions made during the Mars Return actually come to pass.

In the 1980s, I was interviewed for the “Washingtonian” magazine at the time of my Mars Return. The editor was very reluctant to publish the article but it finally hit the streets at the time of my First Square.

Generally, when Mars returns to the natal sign, the Mars Return, it is an excellent time to plan your future activities. The House Position of Mars in the Mars return chart, calculated for the time when Mars returns exactly to its natal position, will indicate what area of your life will be highlighted during the next 2-year cycle.

1st House: You feel more in control of your life and activities. Asserting one’s self is much easier now. It is a time to demand life on your own terms. It is also easier to be in the spotlight. Social interaction is easy. You feel better now. There are exceptions when the Mars is heavily afflicted and you may have to address health issues. However, I have never found afflictions to Mars to be indicative of difficulties. They are simply energizing. If you cannot assert yourself for yourself, the energy may implode and the health will be affected.

2nd House: Finances are emphasized. Money matters can improve. However, watch spending now. The 2nd House is the most compulsive House.

3rd House: This is a mentally active time. Lots of new ideas, short trips and mental interaction with others are all favored. It is a learning and teaching cycle.

4th House: There is greater activity around the home and family. It is an excellent time to conduct renovations and repairs, to spend more time with family and there can also be changes in the work environment.

If you prefer a life of travel, you may feel stuck at home or in the office during this period. If you need private time, this can be a fulfilling period in your life. Sometimes family responsibilities and commitments take up your time

5th House: This is a time to focus upon personal creativity and just having fun. If attempting a pregnancy, this is a good cycle. In psychological terms, it is an important time to give structure to the Creative Child within. Since Mars is action/activity oriented, it is excellent for conferences, workshops and educational activities where people have fun. It is a time to focus upon hobbies and your creative talents.

6th House: This is a busy time. I have traveled at this time but I had a lot of work to do – professional activities, conferences, seminars and lectures.

7th House: Relationships are the focus. Meeting and interacting with people is strongly indicated. It is a social time but usually on other people’s terms— doing what they want which can facilitate growth and new experiences. During one 7th House cycle, there were relationship crises. In my most recent 7th House cycle, my career was highlighted with a greater public presentation of my work— workshops, lectures and a new website.

8th House: Money Issues— both gains and expenses. I have received “unearned income” at this time. I am thinking that it may be a good cycle for playing the lottery— but I never won anything.

9th House: All expansive activities are stimulated— travel, education, communications and media activities, publications. Spiritual activities are favored.

10th House: Career and professional activities are highlighted. It is a good time to be out in the world and seek recognition. I have found that my work suddenly gets recognition. I am in the spotlight.

11th House: This is a good social time with meetings with friends, groups and organizations. I have given lectures to groups and I have attended new lectures.

12th House: A sense of isolation prevails. If you are not comfortable being alone, this can be a frustrating time. You can feel walled off from others. It is a good time to get in touch with yourself and your feelings. It is a good time for retreat and meditation.

In the Vedic system, this House rules foreign lands but, basically, going to places where people do not know the “old self.” In doing so, you are free to grow and develop, free from the expectation projections of others.

Mars Cycle

Mars Return— According to John Townley, “The individual often finds (the Mars Return) this a time of new projects and commitments, often accompanied by higher pay status and the increased responsibility and time/expenditure that such change of status often requires. Naturally, it is a good time to start a new job or project and, conversely, new jobs and projects just seem to turn up at this time.” I personally relate this to the fact that the energy level is higher and this energy or charisma is attractive to others— you project yourself with greater confidence, your aura is stronger and there is a radiance that is attractive to others. This explains why it is easier to get a job during the Mars Return.

Healthwise, recuperative abilities are enhanced at this time as well.

Mars Opposition— Approximately one year after the Mars Return, you will experience the Mars Opposition, a time when Mars begins to transit the sign opposite to your natal Mars position. This is a time your energy level is at its lowest ebb, interests in achieving and initiating are sluggish and it is a period to rest and indulge yourself. Indulgent spending is not uncommon at this time, as well as compulsive eating. The Eating Phenomena occurs because the body feels that the fatigue is due to a lack of nourishment.

This is actually a time when the physical body is on RECHARGE! While the body is recharging, it is important to expand as little energy as possibly. In expending too much energy during this cycle, your body will not be fully recharged to carry your through the next 23 months. It is NOT a time for elective surgery since your recuperative abilities are not good.

During the Mars opposition, the most critical period (lasting 2-2.5 days) occurs when the Moon is in the sign opposite to its natal position (this is not necessarily the natal Mars sign position). The energy level and reflexes are critically weak and you are susceptible to illness or accidents.

I tend to overlook this cycle until it returns every 2 years. One such period can be best described as a time when I “led the life of a slug.” My readings were uninspired (to suit my Virgo demands). I did not want to work. I scheduled readings for evenings so that I could sleep late. I lacked my usual high energy. During a period when both the Moon and Mars were in their opposition signs, I overtaxed myself and pulled a muscle in my back. Low energy can make one careless so that you can become more accident prone, make simple mistakes or errors in judgment.

Because of the low energy, it is not a time to apply for an important job since your natural radiance and confidence will sharply dim. Realizing this, do not be discouraged. You can take whatever is available and wait for a better cycle.

Last Square— The final cycle, before the next Mars Return, is the Last Square. Basically, I find this a good time to let go of what you no longer need or need to do. It is an ending cycle.

  1. Lynn Koiner Says:

These are my 12th House Interpretation Notes from my classes:

TWELFTH HOUSE: Qualities deemed intolerable by the parents so we learned to repress these qualities. It is difficult to express the energy of the planet at the personality level so it can only be expressed or cultivated through the career and worldly interaction. It is what we keep from ourselves…and this can bring us great sorrow. It does have a connection with past life issues that impact us now. Gina Cerminara’s Many Mansions I & II give good examples of past life issues and possibilities. I have Mercury in Leo in 12th – an error in judgment from a past life makes me afraid of making certain decisions, possibly fearing that thousands may die if I decide badly. Bush has this in the 1st so he is making these mistakes now. People with planets in the 12th House need private time. Especially with the Sun here, these people can not be ON 24/7. They need to get away. When others get noisy or aggressive, these people get quiet.

ESOTERIC: This said to be the House of Personal Un-doing. Lack of acceptance, lack of nurturing and lacking in an ability to RECEIVE is truly self-undoing. The emotional handicap we experience creates a self-imposed prison. The sentence ends when we learn to accept ourselves AS IS – as well as others. In going through hell ourselves, we can learn compassion and acceptance of others. This House is a Guinea Pig house —what happens to us we can use to help others. Let go of fear!! Fear itself can provide a feeling of security – I cannot do something because of my “nerves,” my phobias, my fears! Remember, when the ego dominates, you will ALWAYS feel insecure. After this process has taken place, the individual can help others to free themselves from similar entanglement. For example, in the chart of Martin Luther King Jr, Vulcan in Aquarius in the 10th shows a destiny to free people from restricting positions, status and standards of living by opening up professional avenues and changing societal views, such as equal rights for blacks, women and minorities. This House is connected with unseen worlds, spirit guides and going inside for guidance.

MEDICAL: This is the House of the Guinea Pig! My health issues all help me help others. This House is medical implications connected with repression and lacking an outlet for the 12th House planet(s). Health issues can be karmic in nature. Personally, I have Mercury in Leo in the 12th House. I have always had ear problems, specifically due to infections. After Neptune opposed this Mercury, I noticed that my hearing is not very good. Now I have to really listen to hear others. I obviously tuned others out in the past. I did not listen. Now I have to force myself to hear others.

  2. Micheline Says:

Hi, this is such a great article. I was looking for some sort of interpreting. I think I found that I have two charts for my mars return. Cause Mars will retro and go back to the same position again. I have mine tomorrow. My mars is at 14.53.27 virgo and it will be there again in 2012. Which one do you follow?

  3. Lynn Koiner Says:

MICHELINE (12-2011): Good question. The first return works until the 2nd return occurs. Then, that one operates for the next 2 years.

  4. Micheline Says:
Q 1: How does one deal with a mars return if Mars is retro in the mars return chart? Should one refrain from taking any actions at all (which if course is really hard) or should one look upon where mars is posited in that particular chart?

Q2. Could having mars in 9th in the mars return also mean music publishing? Originally, I was planning on only making a mini CD but now I really want to do the full month!!! I don’t care how many obstacles there are but I feel that it would be a good idea!

  5. Lynn Koiner Says:

MICHELINE (2-2012): You asked a very similar question in #7 and the answer will be the same — each time Mars crosses your natal Mars you will have a Mars Return that lasts until the next one occurs, whether this is a month or 6 months away, or 2 years.
People can have as many as 3 returns with a retrograde.
The 9th does rule publishing, esp. if it is the last Return, but only the outer transits and progressions will give the entire picture of the situation.

  6. Clair Says:

Something guided me to this page today and I’m so grateful! I am at the opposition point in this cycle and have been completely taken over by an eating compulsion for the last few days. It is quite out of character for me, and really threw me. I just didn’t know what to make of it. (Mars has been whizzing back and forth over my Moon too, which isn’t in aspect to natal Mars, but just close enough for this transit to catch them both around the same time as it zigzags though this part of the zodiac, so it makes even more sense.)This was so reassuring. Thank you.

  7. Lynn Koiner Says:

CLAIR (4-2012): The body is at a low energy cycle. Many times, when the body feels tired, it thinks it needs food. Instead of eating, try to lay down instead. Of course, you cannot do this in an office setting but recognize it as fatigue, not hunger.

Often, when Mars changes signs, we feel the difference…but this will not happen until early July! Do not get into the habit of eating for energy as it can continue. Break the habit — I talk to my body and tell her that she is just tired and the food will not help…that’s about the best advice that I can offer.

  8. Rebecca Says:

    Dear Lynn,

Thank you for helping me to see the 12th house in a more positive way.
I am having the Sun conjunct Mars in virgo in the 12th house, at 10 and 12 degrees.
Constant vitality is not one of my strength. But I manage!
Mars transiting will conjunct these two planets very soon.
Do you think it is an appropriate time to let go of bad eating habits, to start a cleansing process and in the same time to evolve toward a more balanced diet?
Will I be able to sustain it if I take this decision at that specific moment?

Thank you for being so available in sharing your life experience!

  9. Clair Says:

I was trying to remember previous opposition points in this cycle through my life, and wondering why this particular manifestation should be so strong this time, and then I realised that the conjunction of transiting retrograde Neptune to natal Mars is exact this week! No wonder the effects of the Mars opposition are more pronounced than usual. Thank you so much for your very sound advice. Understanding what is happening makes all the difference and will make it much easier to implement it.

  10. Lynn Koiner Says:

REBECCA (4-2012): Yes, this is an excellent time to make transformations — renovations in your environment (many of my friends and myself are doing this) and renovations in your body.
If what you do is truly a life style change, it can be sustained. If you just do a denial diet, it will not last.

CLAIR: Yes, indeed, that Mars R opposing Neptune is something to watch in our behavior. Lots can fizzle out with Neptune.

  11. segurelha Says:

The description of Mars transiting each house depends a lot of your rising sign (whether for instance a eighth house falls in water sign meaning increased emotions, of whether a fifth house in earth sign by which means not such a great fun)

I have Aquarius rising, usually Mars transiting my first means a time of a great rebellious feeling. This is one of the harshest and most difficult periods. I need freedom and to assert myself, but often I can’t be practical and getting my job life going with such transit and influence happening. Transit to 3rd house means a lot of social contacts. Mars in 4th means a shift in my priorities and often for me relationships crises. Mars in 7th is usually a blessed time of travelling and social activity, as is 9th house. Mars transiting my 10th house, which is scorpio means I am definitively not the spotlight and I reevaluate my carrer and direction, often pushing great emotional inner crises, which continue until they manifest outwards when Mars reaches the first house.

Now I have a damn Mars going on my 12th. I can only feel good alone and at home. If I go to work, I feel not wanting to work. If I relate to someone I feel a need to relate deeply or otherwise be alone

    These are my Mars stories.

  12. monica B Says:

I have transiting Mars square my Aquarius ascendant. What effect will it have on relationships etc.?

  13. Lynn Koiner Says:

MONICA (2-2013): My goodness, Mars only squares your Ascendant for 2 days (and then you need to be use the degree is correct/rectified as it can be off by 1 degree).

It just makes you impatient and possibly irritable. Just be friendly and nothing will happen.

  14. Caro D Says:

Very interesting article> im experiencing the opposition now and am snacking a lot. also have been indulging in a new wardrobe but trying to keep my spending down!(venus just past this point too) waiting news on a new job.

the job is in a new area but not a step up- although I think it will lead to something better. However I am annoyed that things are so slow to get contract sorted out etc. I wondering should I look for something else?

my natal mars in 12th house and I travelled this time last year to asia- which may have been the influence of a mars return.(although there was the very long transit of mars in virgo last year)

  15. Peter Says:

Another interesting website. You are spot on about the health problems of a transiting Mars opposition to one’s natal Mars. I understand that the 6th house is not only about work and service but also ill health? I have taurus ruling my 6th house and have recently experienced the transit of the personal planets through my 6th house all in opposition with my stellium of the Moon, Mars and Saturn in my 12th house. Transiting Mars has only just finished an opposition with my natal Ascendant. It has been a bad month for me as I’ve been ill with flu and other viruses. Do the problems of ill health become more accentuated with transits forming bad aspects through the 6th house? Your article says that the body is in a process of recharge – the start of a new cycle?

  16. Lynn Koiner Says:

PETER (6-2013): If we push ourselves or do too much during the opposition, the body cannot handle this well. I traveled to Europe last October during my opposition and I could not recharge. So, I got horrible bronchitis. You need to allow the body to recharge itself.

It is a new cycle for the body only – starting when Mars changes signs.

If you have planets in the 6th House, this House rules congenital weaknesses in the body. It also rules the body function of eliminating wastes. Keeping the colon clear when there are aspects to the 6th House planets can be helpful.

Stress in the working environment and with co-workers can impact the health.

  17. Lynn Koiner Says:

    MARIANA (7-2013): LOW ENERGY

A Mars Return would not lower the energy level but Saturn crossing the Ascendant does affect the energy and even the health.
I strong advise going to a Gynecologist and getting a hormone saliva test for all hormones, including the adrenal-thyroid.
If you are taking melatonin, stop for a time. It built up in my system and my body was in a constant sleep mode. I will write about this on Common Cures later.
If you do not have insurance, you can find an Adrenal supplement with actual raw adrenal gland and Keto-DHEA. This type of DHEA does not affect the development of female hormones so it is safe.

If I have learned anything from my medical research, the hormone levels need to be in balance before other supplements will work. Find a gynecologist who offers this service.

  18. Janis Says:

I was taught the job wouldn’t last if it was started during the last square of a mars cycle. This indeed happened to my son. Glad to know that you haven’t experienced that! Thanks so much!

  19. Lynn Koiner Says:

JANIS (8-2014): You are absolutely correct that the last quarter phase of the Mars cycle is a time for letting go of what you do not need to do.

Jobs are not easy to find so do not put your life on hold just for Mars. The last quarter will work itself out in some general way. Remember, the last quarter lasts for about 6 months – that is a long time.

Find other things to release – clearing out the closets, finishing up projects and even letting go of bad habits.

  20. Lynn Koiner Says:

PARTH (11-2015): I cannot make an accurate assessment of what is going on in a chart when people list returns, midpoints, aspects and whatnot. And, I do not put much emphasis upon Mercury and Venus Returns (mental interests of the year and where you can find love and appreciation for the year).

Aspects to the Nodes highlight the energy of the aspecting planet. When my progressed Moon crossed my Node, it was an extremely emotional time due to the death of my mother. This aspect did not portend death at all – there were other transits – but it highlighted the extreme emotions. Since, at this stage of evolution, everything is karmic so I do not weight karma with the Nodes – everything is karma or grace.

Robert Corrie teaches that, when more than one Return occurs on the same day, it will be an eventful year. This has not worked in my chart but I have not researched this theory and Robert has.

I like Moon and Mars Return charts for fun but it is the transits and progressions that produce events for me. Returns are much less an influence than the direct aspects to the chart.

BUT, do keep a chart journal of what happens each year with these returns. You will learn more than in any astrology class.

  21. Alexander Says:

    Dear Lynn,

Thanks so much for your insights.

In desperation with natal mars in 0 degrees Gemini close to MC, as much as I am trying to master anger and resentment, it is beyond control regardless of the level of consciousness :(
Really this is not an exaggeration but despair . despite teraphy, mediation, reading all of it, I am angry!

I just feel the family stuff will always haunt me and I will never be able to live free of conflict,.

So now Mars will turn direct sqaring my ascendent for a really long time and the exact degree which is also in my SR this year :(((
I read that Heath Leger died when his mars as Sun and Asc ruler was was sacred by transiting mars, together with many other transits of course. )
And I am aware astrology has no cook book but I seriously can not not react. And sucidel I do get when in depth of despair.

Any tips on station retro Mars square ascendent (leo) coping?

    Thank you in advance,
    Angry A

  22. Lynn Koiner Says:

ANGRY (5-2016): First, this is from my Manual on Beginning and Ending Planets…for a Beginning Mars…

BEGINNING MARS: A Beginning Mars indicates lessons needed in learning to initiate energies and actions in an appropriate manner. Invariably, these people need to have some pressure applied to get them started or, when they do initiate, they come off like a “bull in a china shop.” People who have problems initiating usually have problems with anger. Some have commented that they bottle their anger and then it comes out inappropriately. Energy can run either high or low. When the energy level was low, one individual commented that she knew instinctively that she needed to taper off and recycle herself.

One type of Beginning Mars may sometimes fear anger and confrontations. These types can often have health issues associated with anger – high blood pressure (Pluto and Jupiter afflictions), low blood pressure (Neptune affliction), arthritis or any “-itis” or inflammation in the body, addictions and some auto-immune diseases.

There is another type, the “bull in the china shop” type, often with strong Fire placements, who has no difficulty starting or rather jumping into new projects. They do have problems regulating their energies. They can jump into a commitment, then think twice, and reverse their decision. This makes them seem irresponsible to others. Acting impulsively without thinking can get them into trouble. There can also be problems regulating the sex drive, especially if Mars is in a Fire sign. One older friend with a Beginning Mars in Sagittarius ran off to get married when she was only 16 years old so that she could have sex (another generation than the current one). This was the biggest disappointment of her life but she was stuck with a husband.

An anomaly to the general difficulty in starting projects occurred with a man who had Mars at 0̊ Pisces in the 12th opposing Neptune. This man had strong Cardinal placements in his chart so that he attracted lots of challenges into his life. This man courageously started many projects during the course of his life but he added that he needed to feel the pressure of his emotions to propel him into action.

✮ One student gave a very telling comment about herself and her anomaly Mars – “I have trouble starting but it is always something that I do not want to do anyway.” This may be a psychological key behind the Beginning Mars. “If I really want to do something, I do it!”

✮ One individual with Mars in Libra felt that she was indecisive in starting any new activity. Because she weighed too much, she needed to be rushed or pushed in a forceful manner in order to get started. Of course, even though she needed the pressure, being rushed caused her to feel angry. A Mars in Gemini individual commented that she wasted a lot of time getting started. She changed her mind too much. Another Mars in Gemini commented that she started too many things at one time and this was problematic to completions.
✮ One woman with a Beginning Mars Retrograde said that she has no clue when she is angry until it is too late. She finds feedback from others very helpful.

When I teach my workshop on this topic, I am always looking for feedback and looking for that anomaly that does not appear to fit the traditional mold of interpretation. One student felt that her husband, with Mars at 1̊ Scorpio was a self-starter and always completed what he started. That night, they discussed this and she obtained some interesting observations and comments by her husband:
✮ “I expressed that I’ve always known him to take the initiative, to look for the job, tear apart a kitchen, make the calls – to be a self-starter. After much thinking, he agreed but he confided he has trouble ‘pulling the trigger.’ That is, he will tear apart the kitchen but not put it back with the idea(s) that he originally had in mind. He will look for the job, send out resumes, but not necessarily jump ship for the new adventure or new line of work.” “Now the interesting thing here is that Mars rules his 4th and 11th Houses. While he does keep old friends for a long time, he expressed much difficulty in making new friends. It is, however, in the 4th house that we really see the Beginning Mars play out: For as long as I have known him, he will tear down something, tear apart kitchens, cabinets, wallpaper BUT not finish it until he HAS to, i.e., sell it (there’s the motivation). He will say it’s because of the financial commitments, because these improvements always cost money, but now I see it as the Beginning Mars. I have seen him dig up the roots of a single tree for 2—3 days, loving the activity, but take several months to replace the gapping hole, until selling the house made it necessary. Yes, the tree replacement would cost a couple hundred dollars, but c’mon…. I used to think that it was his Sag/Gemini going on to the next thing.” “We have observed that many people, who are not rolling in the dough, tend to get their kitchens done, trees planted, and cabinets refinished. We have both talked about our parental units not providing ‘blueprints’ on how to be a householder — his Mars in 10th, ruling 4th.” “It seems we’ve both chosen lifetimes to work on a lot of these issues ourselves without much help from the outside or from the parental.”

This is an excellent example of a Beginning Planet not learning how to use the planet from the parents. The energy and using the energy must be self-taught!

She added, “My husband will help anyone finish their kitchens, plant a tree, or fix a roof. It’s the cobbler’s children with no shoes. Since his Beginning Mars is in the 10th house, her husband confided that he also had trouble ‘pulling the trigger’ at work. He has the idea, knows what to do, gets it started but sometimes without the follow through or without the momentum. Now in the workplace — bosses can often provide the ‘motivation’ necessary.”

About Mars square the ASC, this happened to be in March but nothing happened that was particularly important. I gave a lecture but this turned out well.

Mars will turn D at 23 degrees and, yes, it will be there a long time. It could be that some angry action or comment will come back to you when Mars turns D. It could be that anger you repress when R will express itself when D. One must look at the entire chart to really know what the possibilities are (and I do not do this on the website).

  23. Sinead Says:

Loved this, I’m 63, going in to my Mars return (finally!) on Wednesday (9 Sag 45). Also, natally I have Virgo sun, Merc, rising so appreciating the Virgo energy boost for this Mars return (bookended w/Merc/Jup & Ven/Jup conjunctions), since Saturn is sitting on my Mars this time around.

But I also am grateful for Saturn/Neptune involvement. Saturn will lend stamina, perseverance to what I’m trying to accomplish by New Years (1st square), Neptune will allow me to refocus on creative & spiritual commitments that have lagged for some time.

Also appreciating that transiting moon will conjoin natal Jupiter on Mars return day!

    Not so bad, is it?

  24. Lynn Koiner Says:

SINEAD (8-2016): The Mars Return is not just on Wednesday. It is the entire time that it is in Sagittarius.

  25. Sinead Says:

Yes, however it is on Wednesday that Mars will finally exactly conjunct due to retrograde. To say it’s a long slog this time around is an understatement! Longest Mars return of my lifetime!

  26. Sinead Says:

Yes, however it is on Wednesday that Mars will finally exactly conjunct due to retrograde. To say it’s a long slog this time around is an understatement!

  27. Peter Says:

    Dear Lynn,

Since the beginning of the year Mars has been in Scorpio my 12th house and from 30 August 2016 it will transit my 1st house. I also have transiting Saturn in my 12th house, my natal Saturn is 29 degrees, Scorpio, 12th house. The symptoms of transiting Saturn in 12th house include the lack of vitality, the need for sleep and inability to assert oneself. I know that the 12th house is a house of seclusion, restrictions etc, but surely a transit of Mars through the 12th house will give some sort of boost of energy or does it compound the situation?

  28. Lynn Koiner Says:

PETER (8-2016): Mars in the 12th is suppressed. I would have your thyroid checked — low normal is not normal. Armour Thyroid can give you a boost. I take 64 mgs. The thyroid gets sluggish as we get older and it is triggered by a suppressed Mars (12th House).

Daily exercise will help free up Mars and give you more energy but not always at first. The less I do the less energy I have.

  29. Barbara Says:

I’m having my Mars return at the exact same time as I get the first hit of Saturn square Mars. Opposite energies aren’t they? Plus, Saturn Mars transit in the sky is triggering all of it. How to best channel this energy?

  30. Will Says:

I don’t understand how to find the house position of Mars at the time of the return – doesn’t it always return to the same sign and house?
