Jupiter retrograde 2008

MAY 9 through SEPTEMBER 8 2008

When Jupiter turns retrograde, the action of Jupiter is reversed so that the emphasis is upon inner awareness and inner growth. It is an excellent time to get in touch with personal integrity. Jupiter rules role playing in order evoke a positive external reaction. When transiting Jupiter is afflicting natal planets, you will find yourself dealing with phoniness in both yourself and others. When Jupiter is retrograde, you should evaluate how you are not being honest with yourself because you are playing a role that is disloyal to your true self. When opportunities arise while Jupiter is retrograde, they are the result of seeds planted in the past from people met or connections made in the past.

Jupiter retrograde is more spiritual and philosophical so it is a time to explore philosophies, possibly something simpler from a time in your past. According to Delphine Jay, this period may produce an event that reminds you of a time when you had a better perspective on life. She furthermore feels that it is an excellent time to complete Jupitarian projects such as going back to school to complete your education, taking a long distance trip that you have postponed, and making a connection with a long lost friendship. It is a good time to take spiritual or philosophical courses with the objective of gaining a better perspective on life.

Because of the spiritual approach to this Jupiter transit, it is not a time to initiate material activities. A business which starts while Jupiter is retrograde will find that much of the business is connected with altruistic and charitable concerns and good causes. Too much help is given for which the company will not receive payment. Obviously, it is excellent for initiating a humanitarian or fund-raising project.

In my chart interpretation, I use the key phrase for the House-position of Jupiter retrograde that it is an area wherein you are able to restore to life things or relationships that are considered dead or dying. Jupiter natally retrograde in the 2nd and 4th House is good for restoring objects or property for resale. It is good for restoring troubled relationships ruled by the various houses. Therefore, it can be assumed that, when Jupiter is transiting retrograde, it is a good time to restore any project or relationship that is failing. I consider Jupiter to be the relating principle in a chart – how we reach out and connect with others and what we relate to most easily. During the retrograde cycle, make the effort to revive that which is failing as ruled by the House-position of the transiting retrograde. Make the effort to go back and make the connection.

Avoid over-reacting or making promises: JULY 3-4 (Venus); SEPTEMBER 7-8 (Station square Mars, very difficult)

  1. Lori Flory Says:

Currently I have Pluto retrograde in my 2nd house. In May Jupiter goes retrograde in my 2nd house as well, both going direct around the same time in September. What does this mean?

    Thanks,
    Lori

  2. Lynn Koiner Says:

Outer Planets are retrograde about 6 months out of the year so I do not make predictions using Retrogrades transiting in the natal chart.

The transiting Retrogrades should be interpreted as a “stand alone” interpretation. Just read what I say for each transiting retrograde and use it in this manner.

  3. anu. Says:

Iam planning to pursue some of my educational plans which was left untouched for past two years…..will I be succesful in studies during this jupiter retrograde period.what impact will it hold on my upcoming very important exams…?

  4. Lynn Koiner Says:

Since Jupiter has been retrograde for approximately 50% of your entire life (remember, it is retrograde for about half of the year, every year), just being retrograde will not answer your question in a specific way. In a very general way, Jupiter retrograde is very good for going back and finishing education. For example, if someone has a natal Jupiter R in the 9th House, their education will be interrupted and they will return for a degree later on. Articles on Retrogrades in the natal chart are found on this website. But, just a transiting retrograde will have no impact upon exams in general. If this transiting Jupiter afflicts your natal planets at the time of the exam, you may be too confident and not study sufficiently to pass. This does not mean that you will fail. Take note of the aspects and work hard on being more prepared…then you will be successful.

  5. Sudha Says:

    Hello Lynn…

    Great overview.
How would you interpret the effects of a retrograde Jupiter in less than a week after Saturn turns direct?
I have a Piscean moon and ascendant. I am looking for a job , post a relocation to my hometown, in the industry that I have been in for the past 5 years. I was on a break for the past 4 months and the job hunt hasn’t been quite flattering – I am just not happy with what I get. I also wish to study further. Do you think going back to the city I was in earlier is advisable? My Jupiter natally is in Virgo – 7th house and not retrograde.

Thanks for the enlightening write up. Just loved it. :D

    Warm Regards,
    Sue.

  6. Chris Says:

I am thinking of beginning a writing project this Memorial Day weekend while on vacation. I would continue this project over the summer and possibly publish it next year. The book is non-fiction and informative based on my knowledge through things learned over the past decade. Is this a wise thought process considering the astrological energy?

  7. Lynn Koiner Says:

First, you would need a professional astrologer to look at your chart to see when you should publish your book.
Astrology cannot give such general answers without a lot of horoscope evaluation.

Both Jupiter and Mercury will be retrograde at the start time that you suggested. This is good for insights, looking at the material in a different way, but know that you will need a lot of editing when you do have it published. Of course, all books need a lot of editing. But, while you have a lot of great insights, some will need to be revised after the planets go direct. Do not feel that this is not a good time to start. The insights are important. But, some ideas will prove impractical and need revision.

  8. Dee Says:

I am launching two websites, one that deals with my business, where folks can go to my site, and find out about my services, and the other is simply an informational site. Is it a good idea to publish these sites- as I’m working on them right now where my goal is to have them both up and running before the end of May.

  9. Micheline Says:

Hi, Lynn, my own jupiter in taurus is retrograde, I understand or have read that it has the opposite action when transiting jupiter goes retrograde.

Is this true? Mine is at 18 d. and it conjucts my natal mc at 16.

thanks Micheline and wonderful and well written article yet again !!!

  10. Sid Says:

    Taurus Ascendent, 1st- House=venus, 2=Sun & Mer, 3= Moon, 4=Pluto, 5= Jupiter, Ketu, Uranius, 7= Mars & Neptune, 11= rahu, 12= Saturn

What would be impact of Jupiter retrograde on my 9th house (i guess) in 2008? I think I still have another 1.5 year of Sade sati .

    please comments.

    Thanks

  11. Lynn Koiner Says:

I see that several posts have not been answered because I was not notified so I am answering everything here:

1 – Suddha/Sue: What you have asked is not connected with Jupiter being retrograde. One needs to look at the transiting Saturn and its aspects and all of the outer planet transits to your chart. If you cannot do this yourself, the NCGR and AFA do recommend astrologers for your area.

Next, if I were you, I would ask a HORARY QUESTION. I am not offering this service but I can tell you how to do it. The astrologer, Alphee LaVoie, does a lot of this work.

Do a chart for the time and date that you strongly ask this question: For example, Should I stay here or move to city? In this chart, the 1st House rules where you are now; the 7th House rules the other place you want to go. Which ever House is strongest and best aspected is where you should be – where you are or at the other place (which I presume is the city).

2 – Micheline: I have never heard this statement about reversing. The outer planets being retrograde are just not that big a deal. I never pay any attention to them.

If I was starting a business, I would not want Saturn or Jupiter is be retrograde in the business chart as the business would have a difficult time making money. I do not caluclate many of these so I only watch Mercury-Venus-Mars.

If it helps, when I give a reading, I never discuss the transiting Jupiter. Years ago, I did a little reserch project. I gave friends a list of dates and asked what happened on these dates. They all exclaimed that these must have been terrible aspects because nothing good happened — they were dates of all good aspects from the transiting Jupiter. Their hopes were dashed when events did not unfold as they expected…typical of Jupiter.

3 – Sid: This transit, as I have told many times, is not significant. If you want to energize this 9th House transit, take classes or take a trip or get involved in something political or philosophical. Repeat an activity or study you have started in the past. This is not very exciting but neither is the Jupiter transit, retrograde or not. The outer planet transits are always most important. Jupiter never gives initiative, only desire. You yourself must provide the push to activate Jupiter.

4 – Dee: Since I know nothing about your chart — and I do not give personal readings on this website — I would also suggest that you ask a HORARY QUESTION. In your case, the 3rd House would tell you about your website and the Moon’s aspects (only the applying aspects are used) would indicate the “activity in the matter.” The Moon’s last aspect (before leaving the sign) would tell the final outcome of the matter. Parallels are used in horary. Books by Ivy Jacobson and John Frawley are excellent on this topic. Horary is something I use but it is NOT my expertise so I cannot answer any questions about horary.

  12. Sraboni Says:

    Hi

My DOB is 22/07/1971 at 13.55 p.m. Calcutta. I have a Jupiter retrograde in my first house – ascendent and the sign is scorpio. I have been going through my Saturn cycle since july 2002 and have been going through a lot of instability in my work and personal life. What does this saturn direct and jupiter retrograde mean for me?

  13. Lynn Koiner Says:

As you know, I do not give personal readings on this website. I suggest the AFA www.astrologers.com where they actually list astrologers in your country. This is an excellent resource. I checked your chart for the Vedic Dasas but I cannot find such a Saturn cycle that began in 2002. This is why you will need an astrologer more familiar with your system of astrology. I have said this in many in these posts. These outer planets are retrograde half of the year. In themselves, they are not significant regarding long term events.

Use the interpretation that I have given for the retrograde time and just apply it to your House system. For example, using western astrology, Saturn is transiting your 10th House of the career and “reaping what you have sown in the past.” If you have done good work in the past, rewards will come in this cycle, especially when Saturn makes any favorable transits to other planets in your chart.

  14. maryann price Says:

    Hi Lynn,

I have transiting jupiter in my sixth house and my natal jupiter is also in the sixth. I am planning to start my new healing practice at the end of June but am now a bit concerned about retro Jupiter. I really need to get some income so don’t know that I can wait until Septembe. Would changing the name of my business in September perhaps help in the long term?

    Thanks a lot.
    Maryann

  15. Lynn Koiner Says:

This is a good question for people starting a business when the aspects are not always good. First, if you e-mail me again, I can put you on my Astro-Column list and this will give you the good days for the coming month…or you can look at my column on www.astralis.it (or visit thru this website). It lists the good days as well.

Jupiter Retrograde does rules HEALING but it is not always best for business, unless it is Healing or Humanitarian.

What do you do? You can start you business anytime but have a Grand Opening, its birth chart, at another time that is more propitious. I have done this before myself.

    I hope this helps….Lynn Koiner

  16. Donia Says:

Hi Lynn – I have a natal retrograde Jupiter in the 6th house (Gemini) and have read that people with natal Jupiter retro actually have easier times during retro periods with various Jupiter related things (money, business, etc). I consider myself quite an unlucky person, especially when it comes to money (I also have natal Mars (Cancer) and Saturn (Leo) retro) and am wondering if the general advice for what not to do during a retro would be basically the opposite for people with natal retros? Any advice for someone with these 3 lovely planets natally backwards? ;-) and thanks for your wonderful website….

  17. Lynn Koiner Says:

The theory that a natal Retrograde planet will express itself better when it is transiting Retrograde only works for Mercury Retrograde…and even these people can be plagued by the retrograde disruption in the lives of others.

Years ago, our astrological group was trying to organize a workshop with Rob Hand while Mercury was transiting retrograde. Everything was chaotic until the organizers asked people who had natal Mercury retrograde to fulfill the preparation tasks. These people were able to organize efficiently without any of the Retrograde problems.

Your personal finances are determined by the 2nd House and its ruler; the 11th House and its ruler; and the Ruler of the Asc.

  18. Donia Says:

hmmmm…. very interesting – so there’s no time that’s “easier” to function for other natal retrogrades? ;-)

oh, and my 2nd and 11th Houses are empty and they are in Aquarius, Scorpio, and Asc in Capricorn….

  19. Lynn Koiner Says:

My articles on R seem very popular but, to be honest, the retrogrades from Jupiter out are not that important. They are retrograde for half of the year, every year. They do work in the manner that I have described in the articles.
But, to say that 6 months out of every year life will be easy…it just does not work this way.

For myself, I only look at Mercury-Venus-Mars when retrograde and they really work at a personal level.

For an “easy time,” you need to look at your progressions and transits. These will indicate the times when there is an easier path. I do not find that Jupiter transits indicate an easier path though. Uranus-Neptune-Pluto, when well aspected, create favorable opportunities. Also, the House that Saturn transits will indicate the dominant area of your life. If you have a Capricorn ASC, Saturn will be elevating and opportunities will grow in strength as it approaches the 10th House, the limelight cycle.

  20. Susan Cohen Says:
I have felt out of sorts since Jupiter went retrograde on May 9 and; actually felt a shift in my energy. My birthdate is 12/10/54 and my ruling planet is Jupiter. I feel like I cannot move forward with any plans because I do not feel as confident about my job as I have in the past Could this retrograde have a bearing on my employment?
  21. Lynn Koiner Says:

Thank you for reposting this in the Jupiter R section. First, Jupiter may not be your ruling planet. It is the ruler of your Sun sign but the ruling planet of a chart is either the Ruler of the Ascendant or the Strongest planet in the chart (by sign, house and aspects).

The symptoms that you describe are not really related to Jupiter being retrograde — it is those darned Saturn transits, especially with the opposition to Mars in Pisces.
Sagittarius, where you have the Sun-Mercury-Ceres, needs freedom and mental challenges to thrive. Saturn puts a halt on these, especially when aspecting Mars. This aspect is like trying to drive a car with one foot on the gas and another foot slammed onto the brakes. It is very frustrating.

Because you were born with Venus conjunct Saturn, the subtle programming from your childhood is that, “Before you can be happy, the people you love must be happy.” Of course, as long as one thinks this, these other people are never going to be happy as long as they can look to you.

The square from Transpluto (article on this website) to Saturn (a generational aspect for people born in the mid-1950s with Saturn in Scorpio) bestows an attitude about responsibility — that you must do it all (if it is to be done right) and it must be done perfectly (TP) or something terrible will happen, totally beyond one’s control (Scorpio).
This attitude will only affect your health over the years and it will not make you any happier for the effort. Fire signs can develop gall bladder symptoms over the years.

I am writing this so that others can benefit from your question and from my answer — the Cycle of Saturn is always a time to re-negotiate your responsibilities to others.
In 2008 and into 2009, as Saturn hits your Sagittarius-Pisces planets, it marks a time to learn to say NO! to the limiting demands of others. There is little that you can do with a frustrating person in your life now (family member or boss). It is better to “go with the flow” under Saturn-Mars and definitely do not take on bigger responsibilities.

Now, let’s go to the good news. I will advise everyone to read my article on the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction that occurs in 2010 into early 2011.

Those individuals born in 1954 will probably have a natal Jupiter-Uranus conjunction. When these 2 planets align themselves, they trigger a “call to action” for those born in 1954-1969-1983…all who have this natal pattern.

For those born in 1954, it is especially dynamic because the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction will first occur in late Pisces — exactly trining (a great aspect) the natal Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Cancer. Water signs pursue something with great passion and emotional investment.

Another piece of good news is that Pluto in Capricorn will begin to favorably aspect your chart – first, favoring Mars in Pisces in 2010-2011. Favorable Pluto transits are always empowering. Mars indicates a new project. In early degrees (4 degrees), it is something new that you have not done before…so do not even try to guess.

For those who do not know where the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction will fall in their horoscope, go to www.astro.com and this website will calculate your horoscope for free. Look at see in what House 28-28 Pisces and 0 Aries will fall in your chart. My article on this website will then analyze what this means.

  22. Rachel Says:

    Dear Lynn,

My natal Sun is in Capricorn, 6th house, and I have natal Jupiter, Mars and Saturn in Virgo, 3rd house. I have been having difficulties in getting a permanent contract in the place where I work for the last 3 years! Most of the problems are related with the fact that my boss has very stressful relations with his superiors. Now I have Jupiter transiting conjunct natal Sun (that should help, right?), but at the same time transiting Saturn is conjunct natal Jupiter. Which one of these influences will prevail? Is it a good time to think about establishing my own health services-related business?

  23. Lynn Koiner Says:

While I do not have your chart and while I do not give personal readings on this website, I will give an answer that will benefit others.

First, Jupiter is a very lazy planet. If you wait for something to happen, Jupiter will disappoint you. BUT, if you give something a Big Push, a big effort, Jupiter will help you.

Next, regarding Saturn, I do not see its crossing your Virgo planets in the 3rd House to be a problem, especially for the health field.

Saturn transiting the 3rd House is a time for both Teaching and Learning. It is a time to both dispense practical knowledge to others and to gain practice knowledge that will round out the personality.
Saturn forces us to be practical and realistic, weed out the deadwood in our lives, in order to become more efficient.
So, a reordering of your work and work skills will prove beneficial.

Next, if you were my client, I would look at your astro-carto-graphy. I believe that these are offered free at www.astro.com

I would find a location that pulls your Sun out of the 6th House and puts it more angular. This would give you more recognition. Of course, you would not have to move to such a location but work done on your Sun line or people who come from your Sun line would help augment your self-esteem and give recognition.

  24. B.L.Praven Says:

    Dear Lynn,

My DOB is “17/04/1981”. I have Jupiter in 5th house in my birth chart with full moon & Saturn. My ascendent is sign “Taurus”. I am a guy who always believes in doing “Good things” will always yields “Good Result” in our “Life”. Most of the time I think of spending some amount to charity & I have done also & still doing. Most of the times I feel “Luck” will be riding on me even when I don’t put much effort, I will get a “Fruitful Result”. But some times even with “Hard rock crush” effort also doesn’t give “Satisfactory result” WHY?
What this “Retrograde of Jupiter to Me”?

    Rest All Planets Positions:

    Sun – Aries – 12th House
    Mars – Aries – 12th House
    Venus – Aries – 12th House
    Mercury – Pises – 11th House

Other two planets – In Cancer & Capricorn respectively.

    Thank You very much :-)

  25. Lynn Koiner Says:

I am not sure exactly what you are asking, “What is Jupiter R to me?” If you are asking about the natal interpretation, I suggest that you look on this website for my article on natal retrogrades. It contains some interpretations for the various Retrogrades in the Houses, including Jupiter in the 5th House.

If you are asking, What is the Transiting Jupiter to me?, then I will say, Probably nothing. It should be interpreted generally as I have described. Jupiter is R for half of the year so it is not really important, unless you desire to work with its Retrograde energies as I described in the article — to go back and reconnect or heal something in your life. It is just a matter of choice.

I cannot say more without a horoscope but I do not give readings on this website. I do enjoy specific questions though. You do have a lot of Cardinal placements and Jupiter just in Capricorn would be a time when you really need to set priorities.

  26. christos Says:

hello. first of all, very interesting article and website. i was born november 14, 1987 at 17:45 in athens, greece. i have sun in scorpio and ascendant in gemini. i have retrograde jupiter in my astro-map. im 21, so i am at the uni. i had some very important exams, i almost failed, unexcpetedly. and now i am doing the whole job from the beginning. next year, i will have to retake the failed units although i passed to the next level. i would like to ask you, will it be a taugh year? will i be able to finish the uni during this period or is it a bad for my education? thank you, cant wait for your reply.

  27. Lynn Koiner Says:

Others have asked the same question about exams but my answer will always be the same – Jupiter R does not affect your ability to pass exams. It is retrograde for a little more than 4 months. The problem could be the transiting Neptune square your 6th House Sun — a lack of focus, a lack of interest in studies or what you are studying, or a lack of boundaries and discipline for studying.
