Minor Aspects in the Natal Chart, by Transit, and by Progression

Observations in Progressions and Transits— as well as some natal considerations.

Note: These are my lecture notes from a lecture that I gave for the NCGR in 1996 in Florida.

SEMISEXTILE (30 degrees)

Reluctance, ambivalence, difficulty moving forward; not using the energies of the planets correctly as they have nothing is common. You are aware of the energies but you are unable to use them. This can be read as an inconjunct.

NOVILE (40 degrees)

A waiting in anticipation influence; you feel in a limbo state as you wait for a transition to occur. Frustration is experienced since you do not know that you are really in a waiting state. Some the next Progressed Moon aspect marks the period to move forward. You must wait for the events to unfold.

SEMISQUARE and SESQUIQUADRATE (45 and 135 degrees)

These operate like the inconjunct/150 degrees. I interpret then as problems with which you are not directly involved. Do not get pulled into another’s problems. Even in natal aspects, these aspects rule excessiveness so that it is easy to get pulled into a problem not your own – then it becomes bigger than it first appeared! It is not a square unless you get involved.

45° RESEARCH: Approaching an opposition, problems occur through getting involved into another’s critical complaints; Separation from an opposition could draw you into another’s interfering behavior.

135° RESEARCH: Approaching an Opposition, discriminating ability is not yet refined. They question and over-analyze to the point of missing the point; Separation from the Opposition cause their excessive desire to share to be annoying to others. Excessiveness results from their lack in skill in disseminating information.

SEPTILE (51+ degrees)

“Out of Left Field” solution to a problem. You need to trust that “something will just happen.” This aspect has an obsessive-compulsive quality to it – something just takes over you. It has occult implications as it is the 7th Harmonic aspect. Obsessive-Compulsive types often have this aspect strong natally, creating extremes of ups and downs. The Septile event is often such a surprise that the individual is unable to take advantage of the opportunity. Psychologists do find that obsessive personalities are often highly creative and inventive.

RESEARCH: My personal research has associated this aspect with bizarre events in the life such as Princess Diana and Roy Sullivan, struck by lightening 7 times and he finally committed suicide. This only occurs when there are many of these aspects. Roy has 7 in his natal chart. It is the Solar Arc Septile that often triggers these events. The Septile aspect natally works best with Quintiles.

In a research project that I initiated in the early 1990s, I found this aspect to have occurred in the charts of children who were put to death in concentration camps. In these situations, other minor aspects were prominent, showing events that are fated and beyond one’s control.

Septiles rule sudden, extraordinary events that come as a surprise. In practical affairs, its rules a surprise opportunity but it is usually such a surprise that you cannot take advantage of it

QUINTILE and BI-QUINTILE (72 & 144 degrees)

This is a highly creative aspect, even in a natal chart. Persuasiveness is a part of its influence. The Bi-Quintile is considered much more persuasive than the 72° Quintile. Its influence on an event is to bring a creative solution to a problem, a logical resolution rather than a Septile-Type solution. In problems, your personal ingenuity, creativity and influence can manipulate your way out. A student found that a negotiating deal was resolved when the Progressed Moon was Quintile Mercury. Minor aspects manifest near exactness.

In the natal chart, the planets involved in the Quintile aspect often describe personal talents and qualities for which we become known – Hitler had a Mars-Pluto Quintile; Marilyn Monroe had a Venus-Neptune Quintile.

It is said that Quintile Dominant personalities have a strong sense of mission but they must first define what they want in order to get it!

INCONJUNCT (150)

These aspects represent problems in which you are only peripherally involved. If you get involved, it will become an opposition, a conflict with another. A new situation requires too much adjustment but there is nothing that you can do about it. Do not travel or you will wait on circumstances, causing delays. New situations, such as creating a new computer system, require that you learn something new and adapt.

When prominent in the natal chart so that a YOD is formed, these people experience many fated events in their lives, events that seem beyond their control. These aspects imply a need for great personal transformation and these people are actually given many opportunities for a major metamorphosis. The 150 degree aspect involves planets, signs and issues that cannot be reconciled or compromised such as with the opposition. The person must totally change his/her attitude about the planets – to re-learn and re-program themselves.

With any inconjunct, the individual is programmed with this misinformation. The analogy that I use in my classes is that they have been taught that somehow a lamp and a stuffed rabbit have something in common. They spend their lives pulling the ear of the rabbit to get the lamp to turn on— but it never does! They must re-program themselves so that they use the lamp switch and not the rabbit ear!

The inconjunct is out of touch with the energy of the planets involved. This condition does not cause a direct conflict. It operates indirectly so that the individual is less inclined to see the importance of the problem. The conflict never seems so bad that the individual is forced to do something about the unfulfilled energies involved. Because it is an indirect problem, the solution is indirect. For example, a Mercury inconjunct aspect needs to learn to communicate indirectly using examples, stories and humor to get their point across…indirectly!

With the YOD, it is as it God has given you 99 chances to correct the dilemma of the inconjunctions. It becomes difficult to even want to change because the individual can too easily rely upon the energy of the sextiles. After 99 chances have passed, God takes over, grabs you by the scruff of the neck and makes the decision for you. The Apex becomes activated. Once activated, the individual completely changes, even the appearance is not the same. With this occurs, the individual often wonders why it took so long to accept the change. Their life becomes dominated by the energy of the Apex planet.

  1. I have a YOD in my birthchart. The Sun in the 3rd House is at the apex of an quincunx with Neptune in the 10th house and Nodes/Pluto conjunction which in some house charts is in the 8th house, in others in the 9th, and in yet another conjoin across the 9th house cusp. There is definitely a “fated” quality to this YOD in that I am a survivor of the AIDS epidemic which actually began on the East Coast in a summer house I shared with others (who were the first three known AIDS cases) , and which eventually took the lives of about 95 percent of the people I knew. I then wrote about that world partly in a successful (best seller+prize winning) novel. Those and subsequent deaths took my soul mate partner, and all but one of my closest male friends. But I am not by any means reconciled to what happened, and never will be, remaining furious at what occurred. I do not think of myself as a particularly sensitive, or caring, or considerate person, and I usually only help others when they are too stupid to help themselves, thus annoying me. Despite those facts , I was a founding and active member of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and I personally cared for many sick and dying people over a 12 year span. Until I was “AIDSed-out” and left my home for good and moved to SoCal. My specs are 2/23/1944, Jamaica, Queens, New York. Two birth certificates: one for 12.43 am that I usually use and one for 2/22/1944 at 11.43 pm. Chiron conjoins my MC in the 2/23 chart. Does this fit in with your interpretation? It doesn’t really seem to except how I remained healthy throughout.

    1. Felice, indeed you have a Yod. Transpluto at 2 Leo is the tightest 150 but I do use wide orbs for the Yod. The Sun is in a Beginning Degree. A Beginning Sun shows that, in this lifetime, you are attempting to develop a well-rounded personality by not being hooked into being one thing for long periods. This is not being scattered — when you have learned what you need to learn, you shut the door and move on to the next cycle. With Neptune and Transpluto (see 2 articles on this website) 150, the sense of self was not strongly developed in the very early environment. In this lifetime, you are to develop this yourself and cultivate a strong, healthy sense of self. This problem seemed to be a male tradition in your family and it is your destiny to change this pattern.

  2. Thanks for that elucidation, Lynn. What you said about shutting the door and moving on to the next cycle seemes correct: I sometimes say I’ve had nine lives already: they are that distinct. And friends would agree that I have a strong healthy sense of self by now. I’m not, was not, close to my family, but both of my brothers, deceased at age 35 and 50 , might not have had developed complete senses of self and it proved self-destructive. I don’t have any 51 Degrees aspects but will look for them in others I know. I like your approach to these aspects. Especially in Secondary Progressions, and despite my age, most of my progressed aspects have been “minor” ones but they didn’t at all feel minor.
