Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron Alignment of 2009

In the autumn of 2007, I attended a lecture by Michael Lutin who discussed this important conjunction in 2009. Everyone in the audience related to what he said but, unfortunately, I took terrible notes! Michael included the North Node in Aquarius into the mix. In my notes, I only find that he felt that this alignment would be both alienating and unifying at the same time. It can be a time of experiencing some “global pain” but Aquarius detaches from actually experiencing and processing the pain. Being pulled by forces that we do not understand, many will feel, “Why Me?”

This marks an anti-social cycle, according to my notes on Lutin, whereby we experience the pain that occurs just before a transformation. Humanity senses a part of themselves that has not been fixed, a time to pull back and lick old wounds but I personally feel that this is indeed a cycle that precedes a transformation. My apologies to Michael that I am not quoting him correctly due to my poor note taking.

I looked back into history— from 1400 to the Present— for other Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron cycles. I did not include the Nodes since this would be more rare. Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron were in close proximity in 1881 in the sign of Taurus and, most potently, in Libra in the year I was born— 1945! At this time, the alignment was squaring the Cancer-Capricorn Nodes. I learned from Richard Tarnas that these cycles produce Souls who are aligned with the planetary energy and they are galvanized into action when the pattern repeats. The 1945 generation is the first generation with this Conjunction who will be alive when this pattern repeats.

It is interesting to note that, during both of these alignments, a sitting president died in office— Garfield and Roosevelt! I feel that there were other factors, such as the Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction in Earth, that portended the death of the president. These patterns are not occurring with the current alignment.

Most significant— military conflicts were ending at the time of this alignment. And, these were periods of a New Openness. Since President Obama has initiated a new “freedom of information” act — even Bush’s secret papers are no longer secret.

I have lived through many planetary alignments and I rarely observed that something specific happened on the exact day. The alignment is an influence that colors the year in which the Conjunction occurs.

Historically, with the 1881 Conjunction of Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron in Taurus:

  • Clara Barton started the American Red Cross* The Panama Canal was begun* The Vatican archives were opened to scholars for their research
  • The 1st Boer War ends with the defeat of the British
  • President Garfield is shot

Historically, with the 1945 Conjunction in Libra:

  • World War II Ended, the Nazis went on trial and the rebuilding of Europe and Japan began
  • The Yugoslavian Republic begun by Tito
  • Women in France are allowed to vote for the first time
  • FDR dies

With only two periods for this alignment in recent history, this is indeed a rare phenomenon1.

Going back in time, I found similar alignments for:

January-May 897
January-February 1038
February-April 1051
January-June-September 1114
This proximity did not occur again until 1881!

ADDENDUM: The Jupiter-Neptune Conjunction in Aquarius with Chiron occurs on May 27 (Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron at 26 degrees) , July 10 (Jupiter-Neptune at 26 degrees with Chiron at 25 degrees and the Moon at 20 degrees) and December 21 (Jupiter-Neptune at 24 degrees with the Moon and Chiron at 22 degrees). At the time of the May and July alignments, the North Node is in Aquarius as well but not near the planetary alignment. Look to see the House where this alignment occurs. Look to see if the alignment aspects any natal planets.

ADDEMDUM: Mara on ncgrastrology phrases the alignment this way … “I think this alignment will be trying for some, healing for others, or that the healing will come after the trying part. But more importantly, I think it will help us usher in a new era on this planet. I sense an openness, a willing to be transformed, a kind of
personal/global sensitivity in all those around me… and I do believe that we are in a position to effect change for the better, globally speaking.”

1 I tried researching a much earlier time in history but Chiron did not appear in the chart wheels until around 650 AD. Ray White at Astrolabe told me that: “They decided a few years back that Chiron is really a comet. It has a very perturbed orbit as it goes into the inner solar system. It is hard to predict with any precision where a comet will be from one orbit to the next. Since it is a comet, I suppose that it is possible that it was not even in the solar system in the year 500. At that time, it may have been somewhere in the Oort Cloud.”

ATTENTION READERS: I have been receiving many questions asking how this alignment will affect their different House positions. To be very candid, I just do not know. This alignment has not occurred since 1945 so there is no way for me to analyze how it has manifested in the past. I do not intent to seem rude when I ignore your question but I do not have a good answer. Please refrain from asking what a specific House position means but PLEASE DO comment on how this alignment is impacting your life. Darlene commented that, with the alignment in her 9th House this year, she will be taking a trip to the Caribbean. This is a perfect way to use a 9th House alignment. And, meeting people from distant places will be important to self-growth. Several of you wrote about Neptune making a strong angle to a natal planet. I urge you to read my Neptune Transit article on this website. I am posting some of my past comments but I apologize because I do not know the meaning of all of the House placements. If you notice anything about a House position being affected with this alignment, please post your observations. Lastly, I do not give personal readings on this website, only by appointment. It may seem that I do but I only give answers that pertain to the article and answers that would be of interest to other readers. Yes, sometimes a question either peeks my interest or tugs at my heart but I am so busy with giving readings to my own clients and teaching for the online college that I cannot give personal readings online. If I observe new information about a House position of this alignment, I will post it then. But, to ask what will happen with Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron in the 7th is an impossible question. I would need to take the time to look at the transits that Neptune is making and any pertinent progressions. This would require a full astrological reading. Sissy commented that she is having a “big identity crisis” with the alignment in the 1st House. This is a good way to describe the alignment in the 1st House. However, I would add that planets within 6 degrees of the 2nd House cusp (but appearing in the 1st House) should be read as influencing the 2nd House. If Neptune is currently aspecting a natal planet, do read my Neptune Transit article. I just received a newsletter from a man at www.astrology-in-action.org and he offers free classes, free books and free sessions with him. This sounds like a good deal to me.

ANOTHER ARTICLE: There is a great 3-part article on the Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron conjunction at this website: http://www.northpointastrology.com/articles.html

NODES: This alignment will start in May and last all year (2009). It will highlight the House position. If a transiting planet aspects a Node, that planet’s energy is highlighted for the year. It does not matter what the nature of the aspect (conj-sq-trine/sextile). Any aspect to the Nodes simply highlights the impact of the planet — Neptune being more mystical, interests in spiritual and metaphysical topics.
Some astrologers say that it brings karmic relationships. Personally, I have never found this to be true.

IN THE 9th HOUSE: I see the Triple Conjunction in the 9th House as a positive experience, expanding upon 9th House issues such as travel, education and consciousness expanding experiences. Nothing in the article should indicate anything negative. It is important to expand consciousness through metaphysical studies and through meeting people from distant places and different cultures.

IN THE 11th HOUSE: Neptune in the 11th can refer to a health issue of someone in your family circle and a disappointment in a relationship. The 11th House actually rules certain issues in the family circle and Neptune can point to someone whose health has been failing. The 11th House rules friendships and group affiliations. When you have outgrown these, there is some type of disappointment that forces you to move on to another set of associations with whom you share a common vision.

IN THE 12th HOUSE: The 12th House portends internal changes and shifts that may not be apparent to others, initially. This is not an inactive time.
The 12th House rules distant places or places where people do not know your “old self.” This would free you to evolve more freely into someone new.
The 12th House rules psychic connections with multi-dimensional realities. The aspects that Neptune makes while in the 12th House can give further information.

INSIGHT from Keisha: “…in the latter half of June when Jupiter/Chiron/Neptune were directly conjunct with my N Sun, I was released from a very oppressive job situation and given freedom to move on to a job with more money (and a little more status) which enables me to move on with my life.” Full comment under Neptune R article.
NOTE from Lynn: As the year (2009) comes to a close, initially I did not notice much with this alignment which occurred in my 6th House trining my 10th House Mars in Gemini.
After reading Keisha’s post, I realize that this was indeed a highly expansive period. I began my Medical Courses for IAA/OCA and I have learned so much from teaching. My intuition has been stronger. Psychically, I got a message that I should start a Global Gathering on the Internet, traveling and teaching for free online, visiting my friends in Europe and interviewing them. This I will do in 2010 with the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction.

  1. Adam Leigh Says:

    Hi Lynn,

This is more of a report than a question. The Neptune-Jupiter-Chiron conjunction is exact my natal moon in the 5th house. The natal moon is part of a t-square with Pluto opposite in late 10th house and Jupiter in the 8th house. I find myself functioning as a gentle catalyst for change in my work environment. The change is manifesting as improved (i.e. healing) relationships among a small staff (primarily women) via collective efforts to achieve a more ideal dynamic of relating, respecting and cooperating. I am quite delighted that hard nature of my personal t-square (which has often been a cross) is manifesting in this positive way. I give credit to the healing planets for the positivity. It is also a testimony to my personal efforts to address the issues the t-square brings, thus having cleared the way for this positive dynamic to be experienced.

I might add something that is not mentioned much on the blogs – that transiting Uranus, the planet of awakening consciousness and evolution, is at 26 degrees Pisces. This gives obvious dynamic support to the Neptune-Jupiter-Chiron conjunction. In my case it is in the sixth house of work and health. So, in addition to the expereinces of upliftment at work I am going through a cleanse to improve my health. Thank you for your excellent work that is shared through this site.

  2. Carolyn Anderson Says:

I have the triple conjunction in my 6th house sextile my Sag., 4th house Moon, and am unemployed.

I am doing a lot of work with our community – which has very high unemployment – trying to help others like myself get back into the workforce.

  3. Lynn Koiner Says:

THANK YOU for offering your insights. This alignment has a strong humanitarian spin. The 4th House is also the place in which you work and your extended family there. Yes, it is always the disadvanced of society and the environments in which people live. Work can become more inspired and altruistic during this expansive cycle – but it is more spiritually expansive. Sometimes doing volunteer work can lead to something that pays. I have a friend with this and he could not find work in New England. He moved to another city, did a lot of volunteer work and then he was offered a paying job in the same humanitarian field. There is a Spirit Guide working with you now and you need to ask for help with the employment….good luck!

  4. Cam Says:

I have the Nep-Jup-Chiron conjunct transiting my 10th house in opposition to my Sun, Saturn, and Mercury. I am graduating college finally,(I’m 31!) and want a career that is more fufilling than the jobs I’ve previously held. Currently, I am unemployed but I have found a passion (and encouragement from peers and professors) to write. However, as much as I want (or think I want) to be a creative writer, I haven’t truly put myself out there and tested the waters of my own ambition. If I never try I don’t have to deal with failure, right? I think this transit for me will be about taking risks(jupiter) in this area of my life (Sun/mercury: creative writing) so that I may heal a wounded (chiron) sense of self (Sun). If I do this, a little career success (tenth house) might arise, or at the very least I will be stripped of any illusions I’ve held about this(neptune).

  5. Lynn Koiner Says:

AN INTERESTING POST FROM A READER:

My sense this morning is that depending on individual aspects, this transit will remind us of our wounds, prompt us to deeper healing and acceptance and give us the opportunity to make better choices as to how we respond to our wounds and the wounds of others.

For me anyway, the transit over my 1st house Venus-Chiron (and Chiron return, I’m 50 years old) renews my awareness of my wounded love life but gives me the understanding that I can choose to take the high road and love myself and others unconditionally (which in turn may bring more love into my life.)

The irony is we can’t heal our own wounds but only the wounds of others. How we react to our own woundedness is the key. If we become protective and defensive and build walls around ourselves, or react with anger, violence, or manipulation, etc. the healing energy of the universe can’t get in and we stay mired in the mud.

This transit potentially (in my humble opinion) is offering vast amounts of healing energy to those who are willing to open to it. The wounds never completely heal in this lifetime (I’m not an active Christian, but what comes to mind is the pictures one sees of the crucified Christ — even after his resurrection, the wounds are still there.)

I also feel an awareness that we are all wounded in some way, and that it is our woundedness that binds us to each other. We can’t go it alone — we need one another to help each other heal and survive. This is the Aquarian theme of brotherhood and we need it now more than ever if we are to survive the challenges facing our planet.

At the same time, for those who have the ability and desire to do so, now is the time for us to send our positive healing energies around the world. Either through prayer or positive intention, our energies will be magnified in beautiful ways, sorely needed in light of all the other difficult aspects that have been our lot of late and which shall continue into the next year or so. We must try to generate as much positive healing energy we can at this time to mitigate the effects of the more difficult aspects that are coming later on.

My sense is there is more to it than this snippet, but that is all that I have consciously understood thus far.

Thank you for allowing me to share this with you. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts as well.

    Happy stargazing!

    Julie

  6. Annie Says:

I have natal Jupiter, Neptune, N.Node conj in Scorpio in 5h and, for good or ill, I’m feeling the transiting conj. It’s occuring two degrees from 8/9h cusp. It’s trining natal conj, but opp Pluto 0deg Virgo. Bad news: my marriage is coming to a slow, bitter end; unrelated to general economy, our finances have completely tanked (when Neptune moves on to 9h, I’m throwing a party!); I’m feeling powerless and “victimy.” Good news: I’m actively seeking, via meditation, journaling to welcome, enhance, embody this energy since it’s a repeat of my natal aspect. My true values/interests are emerging from a lifetime of being kept under wraps (no future in people-pleasing) – letting my light shine! (Uranus conj Sun doesn’t hurt either.) I strongly feel it’s time for me to dump old meaningless patterns of thought/behaviour. Overcoming deeply ingrained habits requires constant effort, but if not now, when? So one part of me wants to hide in the closet, the other says, “bring it!” Pluto is coming into conj with 6/7h Moon, opp Asc, which is pouring it’s own special sauce on this whole dish, I may need two napkins.
Thank you for your generosity in offering this phenomenal website.

  7. Sharon Says:

    Hi Lynn!

The one on the 21st of December will be exact to my N Chiron (just in my 10th house) and my MC line, squaring my N Sun in the 12th, trine my N Jupiter in my 5th, opposing my N Pluto in my 4th.

This has been an interesting few years for me leading up to this point both in regards to my health and in my career/job and me having to stand up for myself at work…it has been a tough battle that I have managed so far to stay in the lead and not be scared off so to speak.

Health issues have led to me postponing my studies and my holistic work, so that I could focus on me, and still maintain my corporate job that pays the bills.

So it will be interesting to continue to observe how this plays out.

    Blessings
    Sharon

  8. LaShanda Says:

What kind of energy would the Jupiter/Neptune/Conjunction produce in the 12th house?

I wanted to ask to, which of the planets would Chiron’s energy be most similar to?

    Thank You!

  9. Lynn Koiner Says:

LASHANDA: The 12th House is internal changes or changes that come from going to a distant place where people do not know you and you are free to be something totally different.
Chiron is actually a comet. No one knows how long it has been trapped in our solar system or how long it will stay here.
It is not like any planet or sign. It is associated with all who feel a stranger in a strange land on this planet (because Chiron does not belong here either), using your intuition for guidance and health issues with which you must live and cures for such problems.

  10. Dennis M. Says:

    Hi Lynn,

Please tell me the effect(s) of this triple conjunction in a person’s natal 2nd house.

They’re conjuncting my natal Jupiter (also in the 2nd house), which trines my natal Uranus in the sixth house, cusping the seventh.

They are also directly trining my natal MC in Libra.

Natal Jupiter and Uranus are in water signs, while natal MC is in air- not exactly a natal grand trine.

My guess is, I should be experiencing outstanding support (perhaps, in a somewhat miraculous fashion) in money/work/ career.

This would prove beneficial, as I’ve been living on a disability for some time, and my art career has not taken off the ground as yet.

    Thanks,

    Dennis M.

  11. Lynn Koiner Says:

HOUSE POSITIONS: Many of you are asking this and I do not know. However, you can read my article on Jupiter-Uranus conjunction and apply the House interpreations to this alignment as well.
I feel that Obama’s inspired speeches abroad that have triggered changes in other countries may be part of this alignment on a global level.

  12. Raju Says:

    Hi Lynn,

I am not as well versed in astrology as many on this page seem to be. However I thought I would pass on my experience if it is useful. On July 10 I had a small row with my team leader at a fairly new job. I had been disappointed with the job anyway but, I shocked everyone especially myself by quitting. I found it hard explaining to people why I just let it go and walked away that day. I have spent the last week alone at home with feelings of guilt, low self esteem etc etc. So if that has anything to do with this alignment then it has not been a positive experience for me at all. Anyway it’s occurring in my first house. I was born Christchurch New Zealand on 4th September 1969 at 3.31pm. Hope that helps. Thank you for your enlightening article though.

    Kind Regard
    Raju Sharma

  13. Lynn Koiner Says:

RAJU: Do not blame the Alignment but do blame its square to your natal Neptune while Saturn is transiting your Mutable T-Square.
Read the Neptune transit article as this is more important in your chart than the Alignment.
Saturn in Virgo transiting your Mutable T-Square through mid-September 2009 is the cause of the depression and low self-esteem. The Neptune transit makes you feel lost in the world.
This Alignment has been inspirational to many people but specifically when it is well aspected to the natal chart. I feel that Obama’s speeches in the Middle East has inspired young people to rebel.
A friend from Europe has always told me that the young people in this part of the world are more progressive, accustomed to western freedom and not so rigidly religious as the older people. All will change when they come into power.

  14. Michelle Says:

The conjunction falls in my 6th. I’ve been having a hard time finding work too. But, the conjunction is quincunx my Saturn at 26 Cancer and sextile Mercury at 26 Aries and I’ve been finding that I’m having some amazing breakthroughs in my thinking, coming to profound realizations about some of my behavior patterns and also taking this time away from work to reevaluate what work means to me, and what I want it to mean to me.

  15. pamela johns Says:

    FASCINATING.

  16. Rashmi Says:

    Hi Lynn,

Could you please tell me when I can get back the real joy that has been my original nature? I have been feeling very disturbed since 19 June 09, feeling hurt, taken granted for and victimized in marriage has led me to be an anxious unhappy ,angry and resentful person. I seem to be learning to live with it, but the original joy seems to be missing. I have been facing health issues and anxieties too during this period. The peace of mind seemed to have vanished.

I had written this query sometime back in this column but was not able to give my complete birth details. I was born on 26 july 1968 at 7 am in New Delhi, India.

Could you please comment, how long this is going to last? Any advice for me?

  18. little_lady Says:

It is transiting my 10th house. I suddenly know what I want to be when I grow up. T. Uranus is also conjunct my 11th house Jupiter in Pisces and trine my Sun/Merc, sextile my Moon (a couple years ago it was square natal Uranus and I was in absolute chaos, after it leaves this conjunction Uranus-Jupiter will be conjunct on a global level so I wonder what that means). Uranus natally is in Sagittarius (as for many in my generation, hmm). Saturn is giving a boost with trines and sextiles to my Sun/Merc/Moon in its opposition to our dear friend Uranus and my Jupiter. T. Pluto is also conjunct my Neptune in the 8th house, so that could be a source of this, too. I’ve read once you go through a conjunction between these planets you won’t be the same again, and I believe that is happening to me. Somehow, I’m not afraid that Neptune is showing it’s illusive/deceptive side at this time. So for me, it seems this transit works in harmony with other transits I’m going through and my natal, producing a whirlwind of insight into what I can do in the world. Things feel RIGHT for the first time.

The only thing the Chiron/Jupiter/Neptune conjunction is doing as far as aspects go is sextile my North Node in 12th house Aries, (another connection, transiting NN sits on my Moon in the 9th house Capricorn).

I’d say this conjunction means resolutions/breakthroughs, in Aquarius, maybe resolutions through revolutions. I hope in a few years it will be clearer on what this is doing on a global scale. I can only speak personally at this point. Thanks Lynn. :) I really enjoy your articles.

  19. cindy Says:

well, the conjunction is in my 11th house which is not very notable in my own chart. i have mercury in the 11th, but a good 15-20 degrees away from the 3 planet conjunction. but this is definitely true for me:

Neptune in the 11th can refer to a health issue of someone in your family circle and a disappointment in a relationship. The 11th House actually rules certain issues in the family circle and Neptune can point to someone whose health has been failing.

my older sister has always been a borderline alcoholic, but her addiction has really taken a turn for the worse in the last year or so. in the last month or so, she’s been turning to me for guidance, as i’ve been in recovery for over 12 years now.

  20. Renata Says:

    Hi Lynn,

In general it is a difficult time for me. That is due to Pluto transiting my Ascendant and Saturn over my Sun and Pluto. I suppose Jupiter and Neptune have a great influence as well as in my natal chart they form a yod (with Saturn in apex).

Looking back to May and July, I would say that the first allignment brought loneliness to my life. At the same time I started discovering more and more bad things about my marriage and a person who pretended to be my friend.

The second allignment brought a major row between me and my husband with the ‘friend’ in the background. Eventually we managed to get rid of her. Our relationship, if anything is left, is undergoing a massive transformation. I think we are heading towards divorce. Although the ‘friend’ infected me with a lot of negative energy, the short episode (I put up with her 8 months) showed me the ways in which people abuse me. Surprisingly, all the features seemed to be accumulated in one person.

I wonder what the December allignment will bring, especially thatthe conjunction will happen on the cusp of my second house and on my progressed Ascendant!

  21. katie Says:

Hey everyone. This transit has been amazing for me..watching how is has played out in other peoples lives around me. I am in wonderlust with astrology it realy is amazing.

I had the conjunction in the 12th house trineing my moon in gem25dgrees 4th house. Sxtile jupiter25aries 2nd house..

i had an amazing healing, spiritual experience. I went travelling alone to thailand, nepal and india fo 3 months. i was xtremly intouch with the wonder of life, you could say i became ‘enlightened’. i wasvery in touch with nature and all of the universe. And i could share it with villiages, communitys from far places.. i saw a spiritual way of living from these people and i learnt from it. i became apart of it.. even though they believed in a different story to me it didnt matter because it was the fact that we were celebrating life. we were acknowledging our existance and seeing it as a beautiful spiritual thing. the details of our beliefs were irrelevant,

it was the feeling of being connected of being apart of the universe.

now that i am back in australia i still feel changed but it is less intense.. it hasmade me see that australia lacks spritual culture massively and that has been contributing to my depressions.. i now realise that i need ‘soulful expression/release’ or else i feel disconnected.
In conclusion i thank my stars for an amazing transit i was lucky enough to have.

Now back to my transitting pluto opp sun at 3cancer, and trans saturn square it… im ready to take you on baby!! GIve me that identity shake up i know i need it now .. woohoo (what other attitude could you take if pluto was about to oppose your sun haha??) embrace it is the key.

love to you all. and especially to you my beloved awareness of (of what we call)astrology.

  22. C Bedard Says:

I have these outer planets in my 10th house. I had a dream at the beginning of a Sand Woman in a Sand Community angrily trying to communicate with me.
The community I am in is trying to build and is holding huge multicultural events in the new rural park meant to attract new business’es to the area of Surrey. Jupiter in Aqarius -foreigners. All that we build is destined to turn to sand in time incl. me. What importance/attachment do I give to that then. ??????
I also just finished reading “Geo. Sands” the genuis woman writer of the early 1800’s and in the end of the book the whole arguement about can one bring the divine down to earth or does one have to transcend, that turned some against her liberated lifestyle in Paris, France politics, arts.
My aq. moon is in the early degrees. Aqarius. Neptune hit it in 2002, I transcended and fell back. Went beyond duality- so I wasn’t as eager to seek as before but I did seem to respond well to the saturn opposing Uranus 11th+ that drew me to want to leave but kept me here by remembrance that I had responsiblities to close. Radical revolution unlike anything I would have thought of – updating throu acceptance and thereby healing more than I. Think this time is not great for seeing the understandings clearly but that gift life and at the same time I managed to maintain what I call the structures of life, doctor’s dentists.
As it parts I too part from the immediate environment that seems to be caught up in blaming and being blamed. What a time we had. Happy New Year everyone. 2009 Dec. 30th
